Baron & Budd Investigates Potential Water Contamination in Guilford County

GREENSBORO, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The nationally recognized attorneys from Baron & Budd, P.C. alongside Hutchens Law Firm LLP, are investigating claims of potential water contamination in Guilford County near the Piedmont Triad International Airport. The County recently sent letters to homeowners regarding water contamination testing on well water systems in the area.

Residents on well water systems living in the vicinity of the airport may be at risk due to the contamination of groundwater by toxic chemicals called PFAS. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are man-made chemicals that are used to create many nonstick, stain resistant, and waterproof products. These chemicals are also used in aqueous film forming foam (AFFF). AFFF is a firefighting agent used to control and extinguish Class B fuel fires at airports, military bases, and fire training centers.

The well water in homes near PTI Airport may have been contaminated when the firefighting foam used at the airport ran off into streams and contaminated the groundwater. The PFAS chemicals in AFFF are often referred to as “forever chemicals” because they do not easily break down and are also highly water soluble, which increases the rate at which they spread contaminating soil, groundwater, and surface water.

“For decades, the companies that manufactured AFFF chemicals and products knew they were toxic and could cause contamination, but they valued profits over clean water,” said Baron & Budd Shareholder, Brett Land. “We are holding them accountable for the damages they have caused to individuals and communities across the nation.”

Residents affected by the water contamination in this area may participate in a lawsuit against the companies that manufactured the toxic substances that have leaked into the groundwater. Lawsuits filed for PFAS contamination seek to recoup the costs associated with:

  • Remediation and/or access to clean water
  • Past and future water contamination testing
  • Loss of use and enjoyment of property; and
  • Decreases in property value

If you live in Guilford County near the airport and your home has a well water system or if you received a letter from the County about water testing, please consider contacting an attorney. Seeking the guidance of an attorney is important in these types of cases.
