INTIMINA Study Uncovers Period Sex Taboo is a Thing of the Past

Multiple benefits linked to having sex while menstruating with a menstrual cup

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A recent study conducted by international women’s healthcare brand INTIMINA and conducted by OnePoll revealed that people are ready to break free of outdated taboos around period sex and instead embrace its benefits. With 2,000 U.S. sexually active adults surveyed, 69% said they are likely to have sex while menstruating while 88% believe having sex during menstruation is nothing to be ashamed about.

The findings further showed 66% are aware there is a menstrual cup that can be worn during sex. In fact, many reported noticing multiple benefits of period sex while using a menstrual cup, including stronger orgasms (62%) which can work as a natural painkiller for cramps (69%). It can also shorten the length of a menstruation cycle (61%) and increase sex drive (40%) due to growth of estrogen and low levels of progesterone.

“This survey highlights that sex during menstruation is not only acceptable, but also potentially beneficial and above all a personal decision,” said Dr. Alyssa Dweck, INTIMINA’s sexual and reproductive health expert. “People no longer need to feel embarrassed or uncomfortable about period sex.”

Of those surveyed, 77% say it is important for people whose partners menstruate to create a healthy and safe environment for them when having period sex – such as preferring to have sex in the shower or bath (77%), sticking to one position (71%) and using condoms (74%).

With INTIMINA’s Ziggy Cup 2, people can feel comfortable with no longer having to abstain from sex during their period. This first-of-its-kind reusable menstrual cup was designed with intimacy in mind, providing all the perks of period protection plus mess-free period sex. Ziggy Cup 2’s flat-fit, slip-free design can’t be felt at all and provides up to eight hours of total comfort and freedom.
