Study Finds Highlight® Product Improves Cleaning 70% in Healthcare Setting

Hospital found Kinnos' Highlight® for Bleach, a visible color additive for disinfectants, to significantly improve cleaning scores within just weeks.

Vericlean® fluorescent gel is marked in hospitals rooms and dries clear. After staff clean, a blacklight reveals which marked spots were missed. Pre-trial, scores for removal of fluorescent marker removal were varied, but within weeks of implementing Highlight® for Bleach Wipes, Hackensack's scores rose to 100% passing, meaning staff had wiped every surface thoroughly. NEW YORK--()--The American Journal of Infection Prevention this month published a peer-reviewed study finding that Highlight® for Bleach, the flagship product of Kinnos, effected rapid improvement in disinfection quality scores. Highlight’s blue color helps hospital cleaning staff visualize their disinfection sprays and wipes, then fades to clear in minutes.

Hackensack Meridian Health studied the colorant in rooms where the patient recently discharged was known to have an infection and bleach is standard cleaning protocol. The ability to see bleach wipes cover a surface with Highlight’s blue led to a 30% improvement in one cleaning performance metric that measures remaining contamination, and 70% in another that measures removal of an invisible fluorescent marker.

“Many hospitals use cleaning scores to measure and retrain staff after the fact, or additive processes like UV light to avoid missed contamination,” says Kinnos CEO Jason Kang, “but now hospitals can instantly see what they’ve missed and simultaneously self-correct.”

“Other studies have validated Highlight, but this study is a milestone in proving that hospitals can see rapid, measurable improvement in their cleaning,” Kang added. Research has shown that raising cleaning scores often translates to reductions in healthcare-associated infections, and Highlight looks forward to similar long-term outcomes.

“Reducing healthcare-associated infections can be achieved through better cleaning and disinfection practices,” said Jerry M. Zuckerman, MD, Vice President of Infection Prevention & Control, Hackensack Meridian Health, who helped lead the research. “With Highlight having such an impact on our cleaning scores, we expect continued use to positively impact our infection rates and enhance patient safety.”

In Q2 of 2022, Kinnos is launching additional disinfectant compatibilities with quaternary ammonium disinfectants that are used widely in transit and healthcare.
