Mercury Financial Names Industry Veteran Susan Steinthal as Chief Legal Officer

Key role will help further advance company's mission of financial inclusion

WILMINGTON, Del.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mercury® Financial LLC (Mercury Financial), a financial inclusion technology company exclusively serving the near-prime market, has brought on legal veteran Susan Steinthal in the key role of Chief Legal Officer. Steinthal joins Mercury Financial from Citizens Bank and arrives during a period of sustained, accelerated growth—a record-breaking, innovative time for Mercury Financial that resulted in reaching more than 1 million accounts in 2021 and extending more than $3.5 billion in credit access to the near-prime market in its pursuit of increased financial inclusion. In her new role, Steinthal is reporting directly to the company’s CEO, James Peterson.

Steinthal brings a wealth of expertise to the role, having served in a number of senior leadership capacities. Most recently, as EVP & Deputy General Counsel at Citizens Bank, Steinthal headed up the Client Advisory Services Legal team covering the Consumer and Commercial Banking lines of business, as well as Business Services and Corporate Development. Before joining Citizens, Steinthal’s legal savvy was recognized in her more than 11 years at Citigroup, where she started as a member of the institutional litigation group before serving as Chief of Staff to the General Counsel and as General Counsel for the International Retail Banking business. Steinthal was previously an associate at the law firms Richards Spears Kibbe & Orbe and Cravath, Swaine & Moore. She earned her J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone scholar, and her A.B. from Princeton University.

“We are thrilled to have Susan join us in our mission of financial inclusion,” said CEO, James Peterson. “Her passion for making a difference, combined with her expertise in the legal and financial sectors will be instrumental in helping us continue to provide better credit opportunities for more Americans, so that they may have better lives.”
