Humana Announces Additional Bold Goal Community for Veterans Population

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) announced today that its Veteran population is the latest addition to its Bold Goal communities. The Bold Goal is Humana’s ambitious population health strategy to improve the health of the communities it serves. Since the 2015 unveiling of its Bold Goal, Humana has focused on addressing the impact that social determinants and health-related social needs such as food insecurity, social isolation and loneliness, transportation and housing quality have on its members and in the communities where they live.

When it comes to addressing the physical and mental health of veterans, Humana’s integrated approach of community, clinical and business integration is essential to addressing the root causes exacerbating poor health. “Through our national Veteran Bold Goal community, we’ll leverage the power of committed partners and stakeholders to create solutions that help veterans achieve their best health,” said Andrew Renda, M.D., MPH, Vice President, Bold Goal and Population Health Strategy for Humana. “We’re proud to add the veteran population to our Bold Goal strategy as it furthers our enterprise commitment to serving those who’ve served our country.”

Humana has a longstanding commitment to honoring and enhancing the lives of veterans. Humana understands that veterans and their families have unique health needs and care options. Advancing Humana’s commitment to the veteran population as a Bold Goal community will continue its role as a community builder and facilitator for improvements to the healthcare system while improving Healthy Days for veterans and their families.

Additionally, to drive better health in the veteran population, Humana cultivates important relationships with Veteran Service Organizations such as, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and AMVETS. Together, Humana and community based organizations address the unique needs of veterans and their families through initiatives aligned to three areas of focus: food insecurity; loneliness and social isolation inclusive of veteran mental health and suicide; and health equity to address barriers to health for underserved veteran subgroups such as veterans of color, female veterans, and homeless veterans.

Through one such initiative, the VFW and Humana have “United to Combat Hunger" for four consecutive years through a collaborative campaign designed to raise awareness and fight food insecurity across the country with a one million meal goal for 2021. And through Far From Alone, a public awareness campaign, Humana and community partners strive to help normalize the issue of loneliness and social isolation, raise awareness about its negative health consequences, and leverage collective resources to help increase social connectedness.

After recognizing veterans’ health benefits could be strengthened and, while listening and working closely with veterans, Humana created the Humana Honor Medicare Advantage plan. The Humana Honor plans, available to anyone with Medicare, are recommended by USAA and cater to veterans by rounding out benefits they may already have through the VA. “Our veterans deserve the very best healthcare and we’re proud to offer targeted care that removes barriers to them having what they need to live a healthy life,” said Ed Sandrick, Humana’s Veterans Channel Executive.

Humana invests in hiring veterans and military spouses to work in the communities we serve, and meet fellow veterans where they are, while also bolstering its service experience for veterans to make healthcare more seamless.
