Newsweek Ranks Children’s Hospital Los Angeles No. 5 in the World for Pediatric Specialty Care

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) has been named as one of the top five pediatric medical centers in the world, according to Newsweek’s World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2022 list.

“It is a phenomenal honor to be ranked among the premier children’s hospitals in the world by the world’s foremost medical experts,” says Paul S. Viviano, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles President and CEO. “This ranking is more than a number—it is a reflection of the character, quality, expertise and compassion that the doctors, nurses, and other Children’s Hospital Los Angeles team members have provided for well over a century.”

This is the first year that pediatric hospitals were distinctly assessed in Newsweek’s annual medical specialty survey, which also ranked adult hospitals in a variety of other disciplines: cardiac surgery, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, orthopedics and pulmonology.

Working with research firm Statista, Newsweek invited more than 40,000 health care providers, hospital leaders, and more, across more than 20 countries to recommend hospitals based on their level of expertise in a given medical subspecialty. According to Newsweek, these rankings are provided to help patients and their loved ones “know which hospitals or state of the art facilities have the most accomplished physicians and diagnosticians and offer the highest level of care.”

Each year, patients ranging from newborn infants to young adults come to CHLA from all 50 U.S. states and 90 countries, with the hospital’s Center for Global Health facilitating services for international patients and their families.

“A worldwide top-5 ranking is a testament to our expert clinicians; patient- and family-centered experience; and reputation, both domestic and internationally,” says Cindy Urbancic, Vice President of the Center for Global Health at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. “When parents choose Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, they can be confident that they are choosing the best care for their kids.”

The final published pediatric specialty rankings included 150 hospitals from 19 countries, with CHLA rounding out the top five:

  1. Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada
  2. Boston Children's Hospital, Boston, United States
  3. Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, United States
  4. Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, United Kingdom
  5. Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Los Angeles, United States

According to the World's Best Specialized Hospitals 2022 methodology report, survey participants provided primary and secondary recommendations for each specialty. Additionally, experts from all over the world were able to participate via online survey on Newsweek.com, with data collected between June to August 2021. Participants could not self-nominate their own institutions. Results were compiled, weighted, ranked, and then validated by an international board of experts.
