Mark Farrah Associates Assessed Health Insurance Segment Profitability

MCMURRAY, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mark Farrah Associates (MFA), www.markfarrah.com, examined trends in membership, claims incurred PMPM (per member per month), adjusted premium PMPM, and MLR (Medical Loss Ratio) for the Individual and Small Group comprehensive segment leaders. Based on an analysis of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ (NAIC) Supplemental Health Care Exhibit (SHCE), MFA analyzed the profitability of both health insurance segments in 2020.

  • The Individual segment sustained a four-year period of profitability, and for the first time since 2015, has experienced enrollment growth, up 6% to 11.3 million members for 2020.
  • While the Small Group segment has lost considerable membership (39.8%) since 2013, overall segment profitability remained strong in 2020.
  • For the Small Group and Individual segments, premium growth stabilized in 2020, with minimal changes over 2019.
