Former U.S. Ambassador to India Kenneth I. Juster to join Freshfields as Senior Counselor

Distinguished diplomat’s substantial experience in government and the private sector will enhance firm’s ability to address clients’ most complex international issues

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (“Freshfields”) announced today that former U.S. Ambassador to India, Kenneth I. Juster, will join the firm as Senior Counselor, based in New York. Ambassador Juster brings over 40 years of experience as a senior government official—at the White House, State Department, Commerce Department, and U.S. Embassy in India—and as a senior business executive and law partner.

At Freshfields, Ambassador Juster will work with the firm’s clients on cross-border and regulatory matters, with a particular focus on the United States and India. Having been involved in some of the most critical geopolitical issues over the past few decades, Ambassador Juster enhances Freshfields’ position as a strategic adviser to global companies navigating increasingly complex international issues.

“As a respected senior diplomat, successful business leader and accomplished lawyer, Ambassador Juster is uniquely positioned to work with our clients on the most pressing business, risk and policy issues in their pursuit of global growth,” said Rafique Bachour, Freshfields’ global managing partner.

Serving as the 25th United States Ambassador to the Republic of India from November 2017 to January 2021, Ambassador Juster led the third largest U.S. Mission in the world. His extensive government service has involved senior leadership roles in shaping U.S. foreign, economic and security policy, including as Deputy Assistant to the President for International Economic Affairs, on both the National Security Council and the National Economic Council; Under Secretary of Commerce; Acting Counselor of the State Department; and Deputy and Senior Adviser to the Deputy Secretary of State.

Ambassador Juster’s wide-ranging experience in the private sector includes positions as a partner and managing director at the investment firm Warburg Pincus, where he focused on geopolitical risk, global public policy and regulatory matters; as executive vice president of law, policy and corporate strategy at salesforce.com, where he served on the company’s five-person executive committee with Chairman and CEO Marc Benioff; and at the law firm Arnold & Porter, where he rose to be a senior partner and his practice involved international arbitration and litigation, corporate counseling, regulatory matters, and international trade and transactions.

“I am very excited to be joining Freshfields at this time of great change in the international system,” said Ambassador Juster. “Freshfields has an outstanding global platform, with an unrivaled client base, and it is extraordinarily well-positioned to work on issues at the intersection of law and public policy. I look forward to contributing to the firm's success by assisting clients in the United States, India, and throughout the world in navigating cross-border, regulatory, and other challenges.”

Ambassador Juster is also a Distinguished Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, as well as a member of the Board of Governors of the East-West Center and the Board of Directors of the American Ditchley Foundation.
