Most Enterprises are Using Three or More Clouds According to Strata Identity Survey

Nearly Two-Thirds of Respondents Say They are Struggling to Manage Identity Silos due to Multi-Clouds and are Concerned About Visibility Gaps

BOULDER, Colo.--()--Strata Identity, the distributed multi-cloud identity orchestration company, today announced the findings of its State of Multi-Cloud Identity Report 2021. The study found that 66% of organizations with $1B or more in revenue use three or more on-premises or public clouds, and one-third use five or more clouds. Due to incompatible identity silos created by these multi-cloud environments, more than 60% of respondents said they lack visibility into policies, apps, and users. Meanwhile, half (51%) are still using manual efforts to manage them.

The survey asked 200 IAM leaders from across North America to share their challenges and priorities for identity management in 2021. Respondents included C-level technology executives responsible for identity and access management (IAM), software engineering, cloud architecture, DevOps, cybersecurity, and IT compliance and governance. All worked for organizations with annual revenue of at least $1 Billion (USD).

“Most on-premises identity systems are nearing end-of-life (EOL) and will no longer be supported in 2022, so organizations need to migrate their apps to the cloud urgently. This explains why 70% of respondents said they have an active cloud migration project planned this year,” said Eric Olden, CEO of Strata. “However, on-premises apps must first be rewritten to work with cloud identity systems, which can take years and cost tens or hundreds of millions of dollars depending on the number of apps. That’s why we built the Maverics Platform — to bridge legacy and cloud identity systems and allow for a gradual and orderly migration.”

Report Highlights

The Strata State of Multi-Cloud Identity Report 2021 focuses on four key areas: adoption, distributed architectures, migration and modernization, and governance. Some of the key findings include:

  • 66% of enterprises use three or more on-premises and public clouds, while an astounding 32% use five or more clouds.
  • The four main reasons organizations adopt a multi-cloud approach are: better cost management, unique capabilities, avoiding vendor lock, and creating redundancy.
  • 60% of respondents struggle with visibility gaps into policies, apps, and users created by identity silos associated with distributed architectures.
  • More than half (51%) are still using manual efforts to manage identity systems.
  • The most-used cloud IAM providers are Microsoft Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) 69%, AWS Cognito 34%, and Okta 25%.
  • The top on-premises IAM providers used are Microsoft Active Directory (AD) 78%, Oracle Access Manager (OAM) 29%, and IBM 26%.
  • 70% of enterprises have an active identity migration/modernization project planned in 2021.
  • 54% of organizations are aware that CA SiteMinder, Oracle Access Manager, RSA ClearTrust, and IBM TAM have reached EOL and will not be supported beyond 2022.
  • 68% of respondents said they plan to migrate from on-premises identity to cloud identity systems by 2022.
  • 57% of enterprises reported they need to rewrite at least some of their apps to migrate to cloud identity systems.

About Strata

Strata is pioneering the concept of identity orchestration for distributed, multi-cloud identity. The Maverics Platform enables enterprises to seamlessly unify on-premises and cloud-based authentication and access systems for consistent identity management in multi-cloud environments. Strata’s distributed approach to identity enables organizations to break decades-old vendor lock-in, preventing a broader transition of enterprise workloads to the public cloud. The company’s founders co-authored the SAML open standard for identity interoperability, created the first cloud identity services, delivered the first open-source identity products, and are now building the first distributed identity platform.
