T.Y. Lin International Acquires Structural Engineering Firm Silman

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces the acquisition of Silman, a leading privately held structurally engineering firm.

Based in New York, Robert Silman founded the firm in 1966, which has additional offices in Washington, DC, Boston, Massachusetts, and Ann Arbor, Michigan. The company excels at collaborating with owners, architects, and consultants and provides an array of services for buildings and facilities projects, including new construction, adaptive reuse and renovation, historic preservation, sustainability and resiliency, and structural investigations. In 2020, Silman was a recipient of the AIA Collaborative Achievement Award. The firm employs a staff of 160.

“Silman is one of the industry’s most respected firms and a leader in the use of emerging technologies,” said Matthew G. Cummings, P.E., TYLI Group President and Chief Executive Officer. “Their innovative spirit, skills, and capabilities in structural engineering will serve as the platform to strengthen our Buildings Market Sector and support our pursuit of meaningful projects that improve the quality of life in communities throughout the Americas.”

Concurrent with the announcement that Silman will be joining TYLI, the firm also announced that Joe Tortorella, who has been with Silman for 42 years and served as President for the last seven years, is stepping aside as part of a long-planned transition. He will remain active with the firm as a key advisor and consultant in the coming years. Nat Oppenheimer, who has been with Silman for 33 years, will assume Tortorella’s leadership responsibilities within TYLI with the support of Silman Senior Principal Kirk Mettam.

“This is an exciting chapter in Silman’s storied history and I’m confident that under Nat’s and Kirk’s leadership, the firm will continue to succeed and grow as a part of T.Y. Lin International,” Tortorella said. “The combination of Silman and T.Y. Lin International will present new professional development opportunities for our staff and a powerful combination of nearly 3,200 people, proven methods and tools, and a broad range of capabilities and solutions for our clients.”

AEC Advisors (www.aecadvisors.com) initiated and served as TYLI’s advisor on this transaction.
