SilviaTerra Launches Natural Capital Exchange, Empowering Companies to Buy High Quality Carbon Offsets from Every American Landowner

SAN FRANCISCO--()--SilviaTerra, a venture-backed climate tech company, today announced the launch of the Natural Capital Exchange (NCAPX), a data-driven forest carbon marketplace. NCAPX is designed to help companies achieve their carbon offset goals through transparency and scale while providing the opportunity for landowners of all sizes to participate. Yesterday, SilviaTerra’s NCAPX was announced as 1 of 26 solutions in Microsoft’s new carbon removal portfolio.

Recent corporate carbon pledges have created a surging demand for carbon credits. NCAPX brings gigatons of new, high quality carbon credits to market by empowering every landowner to sell carbon credits from their forest with no upfront costs. Satellite-based measurements of every acre every year create forest carbon credits with an unprecedented level of transparency and integrity.

As a Microsoft AI for Earth grantee, SilviaTerra created Basemap, the first high-resolution forest map of every acre of America. SilviaTerra is the only company to measure every acre of forest every year.

“Demand for more transparency and verifiability in carbon offsets is rapidly increasing, especially as corporations transition to a net-zero economy. SilviaTerra’s unique position of truly understanding forests allows for a data-driven, science-based marketplace that enables more carbon to be sequestered on the landscape for fewer dollars,” said Zack Parisa, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SilviaTerra. “We couldn’t be more excited to empower both companies and landowners to be part of the climate solution during this pivotal decade.”

Elizabeth Willmott, Carbon Program Manager at Microsoft added, “SilviaTerra's NCAPX project will play a valuable role in helping Microsoft remove carbon from the atmosphere, and we look forward to seeing it make carbon market participation more accessible to landowners of all sizes.”

The first NCAPX quarterly cycle begins on April 1st; sourcing carbon credits from landowners in the U.S. South. By the end of 2021, all landowners in the contiguous United States will be eligible to participate. The launch of NCAPX builds on the success of a 2019 pilot with Microsoft and 20 landowners in Pennsylvania that resulted in over 6,800 tons of carbon sequestered.
