Nevada Virtual Academy Driving Forward to Celebrate 2020 Graduates with Online Commencements & Multiple ‘Drive-Thru’ Social Distance Ceremonies

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As many brick-and-mortar schools around the country struggled to become fully integrated online this past spring due to coronavirus, Nevada Virtual Academy (NVVA), an online public school serving K-12 students throughout the state for the last 13 years, will cap off their school year by celebrating the Class of 2020 in three “Drive-Thru” ceremonies next week.

NVVA will host three separate car processions through a neighboring parking lot, leading up to the “stage” in front of the school, where the school plans to hand out diplomas, yard signs, cords, and more, to students in cars, in a safe and socially distant manner.

There will also be an online video that includes quick blurbs from Valedictorians and a quick hello from U.S. State Senator Cortez-Masto, and Nevada Assemblyman Alex Assefa.

This year, NVVA will graduate nearly 220 students, many of whom have been enrolled at NVVA their entire high school career.

Collectively, the class reports having been accepted to colleges and universities across Nevada and beyond, including: University of Nevada-Las Vegas, University of Nevada-Reno, Southern Utah University, and BYU-Idaho.

“It’s been a very challenging year for Nevada students so anything we can do to establish a sense of normalcy will really help,” said NVVA Head of School Dr. Yolanda Hamilton. “We had to think out of the box, and onto the driveway, to make this a special moment on their special day!”

NVVA Valedictorians, as well as Dr. Hamilton, will be available for media interviews.

Students enroll in virtual school for a number of reasons, including those looking to escape bullying, those looking to get back on track academically, or those looking for an alternative to the traditional brick-and-mortar classroom setting. NVVA students access a robust online curriculum in the core subjects and a host of electives and attend live virtual classes every day taught by state-licensed teachers.
