Chemical Insights Delivers Critical Pollutant Exposure Information You Can Trust

Research focuses on pollutant exposures and impact on human health

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Chemical Insights, an Institute of Underwriters Laboratories, has officially launched to deliver the scientific insight that policymakers, healthcare providers, business leaders and consumers can depend on to make informed environmental health decisions.

Led by Dr. Marilyn Black, vice president and senior technical advisor for Underwriters Laboratories, Chemical Insights with its human exposure laboratory, expert technical staff and key University partners is addressing some of the most critical, challenging, and diverse scientific research initiatives on pollutant exposures.

To ensure Chemical Insights initiatives deliver the highest value results, the organization follows a straightforward, comprehensive – and effective – development process. After working with stakeholders to define the public health risks associated with an evolving technology, Chemical Insights conducts independent research and analysis on the health and well-being impact. Key discoveries are then shared with stakeholders and the general public. Ultimately, Chemical Insights’ research supports the development of standards and best practices for the safer commercialization of evolving technology.

Chemical Insights’ current research initiatives include:

  • 3D Printing: Evaluating current and future additive manufacturing techniques and the effects of their pollutant releases on human health;
  • Flame Retardants and Furniture Flammability: Assessing flame retardant exposure levels, routes of exposure, and flammability characteristics of residential furniture constructed with different materials and flame retardants;
  • Global Air Pollution: Identifying chemical and particle sources of pollution in different countries and measuring human exposure routes to advance solutions for improving health outcomes;
  • Chemical Exposure: Determining the sources and influence of indoor and outdoor pollutant exposure from consumer products on acute and chronic health impacts; and
  • E-Cigarette and Vaping: Measuring chemical exposure and human toxicity using a range of generation models, E- liquids, and specialized exposure chambers.

“Our research in identifying the potential dangers of 3D printing emissions, flame retardant exposure from upholstered furniture and the impact of global air pollutant exposure on children’s health has resulted in a reputation we’re proud to own. And one we intend to build on with confidence,” said Dr. Black.

With the backing of Underwriters Laboratories and a legacy of trusted science, Chemical Insights conducts its scientific research on pollutant exposure safety both independently and in collaboration with leading research universities and experts. “Unlike other research institutes, we don’t view our research findings as the end goal,” said Dr. Black. “Our mission, and our passion, is to produce the knowledge and dialogue that creates real change – improving the environment and, most importantly, human health.”
