Looker Launches Certification Program to Empower People with Validated Data Skills

Program Launches with LookML Developer and Business Analyst Certifications with More to Be Added Over Time

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Looker, a leading data platform company, today announced its Looker Certification program for people to get “Looker Certified.” The program is launching with two exams that are available now - a LookML Developer Certification and a Business Analyst Certification - with additional exams to be rolled out over time.

"After three years of using Looker, I was curious to gauge my proficiency with the platform," said Brian Donaldson, Senior Manager, Development Engineering at Mirantis. "I passed both the Business Analyst and Developer exams and now have official documentation that confirms my ability for these roles. As I reflect on the experience and the quality of the tests, it's clear the Looker Certification program is a boon for hiring managers as it highlights experienced candidates for jobs requiring Looker skills."

The demand for individuals to be able to validate their Looker experience to both current and future employers continues to increase. In the first week of December 2019 alone, there were over 500 new jobs posted to LinkedIn from companies of various backgrounds that require Looker skills.

“We want those using Looker to know that we are absolutely invested in their individual success while also providing our customers and partners with a benchmark for recruiting for Looker skills,” Tiffany Powell, Global Head of Knowledge Management at Looker. “Our goal is for people to see the certification program as a valuable tool for both their career and personal development while also providing a quantifiable validation of data and analytic skills for job searchers and job seekers alike.”

The Looker Certification exams can be taken in-person at a testing center with a proctor, or online with a proctor via a computer camera to ensure integrity of the exam. Each exam costs $250 per attempt, and certified individuals need to be recertified every year. The following exams are now available:

  • LookML Developer: This exam is for LookML developers who are comfortable with SQL and have 3+ months experience modeling data using LookML. It covers LookML code development, maintenance, and troubleshooting, caching policies and data modeling best practices.
  • Business Analyst: This exam is for Looker users who have been creating and curating content using Looker for 5+ months. It will test skills in report development, data visualization, and dashboard best practices.

“As an omni-channel business, data science definitely plays a key role in our decision making,” said Tyler Kinnie, Head of Recruiting and Candidate Experience at Tuft & Needle. “Looker is central to our data science work, so candidates that have experience on this platform are highly sought after. Spotting the Looker Certification program on a resume will quickly tell us that a candidate has some of the preferred experience that we’re looking for. Streamlining this process will help expedite the interview flow and provide a positive candidate experience.”
