United Capital Partners with Girls Who Invest to Mentor Next Generation of Women in Finance

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--()--United Capital Financial Advisers LLC (“United Capital”), the country’s first and largest financial life management firm, is partnering with Girls Who Invest (“GWI”), a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the number of women in portfolio management and executive leadership in the asset management industry.

As part of the partnership, United Capital welcomed two college students for a six-week paid internship with its Atlanta and Dallas offices as part of GWI’s Summer Intensive Program. Through a four-week, on-campus program, the internship strives to give students hands-on experience in essential financial concepts including the time value of money, risk and return, capital asset pricing model, financial statement analysis and valuation.

The Summer Intensive Program aligns with United Capital’s long-standing goals of bringing more voices into financial life management, whether by engaging all members of client households with gamified tools like MoneyMind® and HonestConversations®, or empowering female career leadership and mentorship at all levels within the United Capital team.

"When I was in school, I hadn't even considered a career in investing. I found a job in investment very much by accident and I feel so fortunate that I did,” said Kara Murphy, CFA®, Chief Investment Officer at United Capital. “Our partnership with Girls Who Invest fulfills a personal mission of mine to make sure that women know how exciting and rewarding a career in investing can be. And, as a result, I believe the financial world will benefit from a wider pool of talent and perspectives."

“Girls Who Invest is on a timely and critical mission to expand gender diversity in the investment management industry,” said Janet Cowell, CEO of Girls Who Invest. “The internship opportunities provided by United Capital will go a long way to introducing potential new career paths to young women who otherwise may not have had a chance to explore this exciting and rewarding field.”

Owen Malcolm, CFA®, Managing Director at United Capital adds, "This partnership is important to us in providing young women the exposure they need to thrive in asset management. Exposing them to real-world scenarios here at United Capital gives them a more holistic perspective to pursue opportunities after graduation."
