ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In honor of Earth Month, The Nature Conservancy launched the Win for Earth contest to celebrate small actions people can take every day to help the environment and live more sustainable lives, in partnership with Discovery and Visa.
“We face big challenges in conserving our planet, and each of us has an important role to play,” said Mark Tercek, CEO of The Nature Conservancy. “This Earth Month, The Nature Conservancy is excited to partner with Discovery and Visa on the Win for Earth contest to highlight the actions we can all take to make our world a better place.”
Members of the public are encouraged to take a photo or video of themselves doing good for the planet, such as reducing CO2 by opting to walk or bike to work, buying local or supporting sustainable farming and seafood, recycling and reusing everyday items like a reusable coffee mug, or showing a love of nature. Then, post the photo or video to their public Instagram or Twitter accounts and inspire others to do the same. Entries should use the hashtag #WinForEarth by the April 30 deadline.

One lucky grand-prize winner of the Win for Earth contest will receive a trip to see TNC’s work firsthand on the Yucatán peninsula in Mexico. The winners will receive unparalleled access to TNC scientists, explore the Mesoamerican reef – a significant disaster defense, and participate in sustainable fishing practices. Additional Visa gift cards and Discovery prize packages will be awarded for the categories “Coolest Commute,” “Local Food Hero,” “Sustainable All-Star” “Most Loveable Tree Hug.”
Discovery, a presenting partner of TNC’s Win for Earth Contest, is contributing $10,000 to plant 10,000 trees in honor of the first 10,000 entries to the contest along with promoting the contest on-air and through their social media channels.
As one of TNC’s supporters, Visa will help promote the contest on social media and cover the cost of some of the prize packages TNC provides to the winners of its contest. (Visa and its client financial institutions have not sponsored or offered this promotion in any way.)
In addition to the competition, The Nature Conservancy will hand out gold medals in 15 cities across the United States to award people for taking environmentally friendly actions. Starting April 19 through Earth Day on April 22, local residents who are spotted on the streets acting in environmentally friendly ways will be awarded fair-trade chocolate “gold” medals.
