Birth and Boom of an Industry: Epi Center MedSpa Celebrates 20 Years

SAN FRANCISCO--()--San Francisco’s Epi Center MedSpa, the nation’s first medical spa and LEED certified facility, is celebrating 20 years since opening its doors in 1998. While medical spas have popped-up all over the world, it was founding partners Margaret Mitchell and world-renowned cosmetic Dermatologist, Patrick Bitter, Sr. MD, who changed the “cosmedical” landscape by introducing a standalone center supervised and visited regularly by a doctor, where patients could have medical skin rejuvenation treatments while enjoying a spa-like setting. They called this facility a “MedSpa,” which would soon become a household name and destination for those interested in no downtime skin rejuvenation treatments. While Dr. Bitter Sr. conceptualized the idea for a MedSpa, Mitchell brought the concept to life with the opening of Epi Center MedSpa and an industry was born.

The medical spa industry is one of the fastest developing in the United States, creating a wealth of opportunity for those within the medical industry. More than 4.6 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in 1999, representing a 66% increase in the total number of procedures since 1998, when Epi Center MedSpa opened its doors, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), shows continued growth in cosmetic procedures over the last year. The annual plastic surgery procedural statistics notes that there were 17.5 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2017. The same statistics reveal that Americans are opting for minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, with these procedures increasing nearly 200% since 2000 and surpassing surgical procedures in 2017. Two of the most popular minimally invasive procedures performed in 2017 were IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or PhotoFacialSM and Dermal Fillers. That holds true for most popular treatments at the Epi Center MedSpa.

In 1979 Dr. Bitter Sr. participated in the FDA clinical trials for injectable Collagen and in 1997 participated in the FDA clinical trials for IPL hair removal. Shortly after getting FDA approval, Dr. Bitter Sr. launched the PhotoFacial® treatment protocol which consists of a series of intense pulsed light treatments that can be performed on the face or body that dramatically improves the appearance of Rosacea, sun damaged skin, photo aging, acne scars, fine lines, and dark circles around the eyes. According to recently released results of a 10-year study by California’s Stanford University, IPL photofacials not only repair signs of aging, but help to prevent future signs of aging as well. The proprietary PhotoFacialSM procedure was introduced to the world in 1998 through the manufacture ESC Medical Systems and it is estimated that the procedure is now performed 40,000 times a day around the world. Since the launch, Dr. Bitter Sr. has trained hundreds of physicians worldwide.

With the introduction of IPL hair removal, laser hair removal and PhotoFacialSM, doctors could now turn over treatments to registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants maximizing the number of patients that could be seen in a day. As a result, the number of treatments performed by an overseeing doctor also doubled. With the introduction of BOTOX® Cosmetic and cosmetic fillers soon after, the medical industry grew exponentially.

Today, the advancement of skin rejuvenation and the success of medical spas across the nation are in part due to the foresight of Dr. Bitter Sr. and Margaret Mitchell. As industry leaders, the duo are known for introducing cutting-edge aesthetic technology to their patients and acting as a resource for the industry, overall.
