Community Developers Committed to Barbuda Recovery after Hurricane Irma

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--()--As partners in a new resort development project unanimously supported by the people of Barbuda, John Paul and Eloise DeJoria, J.B. Turbidy, and Discovery Land Company have pledged their support to the relief and rebuilding efforts on the Caribbean island following the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma earlier this week.

“We are deeply saddened by the impact the hurricane has had on the lives of the beloved people of Barbuda,” said John Paul DeJoria. “Recovery will be an arduous process and we are committed to providing aid over the long term. By working together, we will be able to lighten the load for all of the affected families.”

“In collaboration with the DeJoria family, Discovery Land Company will focus all of its resources to assist in the immediate rebuilding of infrastructure and to helping the people of Barbuda with the essential facilities and resources on which their lives depend. The people of Barbuda are the core of our project, so their needs must come first,” said Michael S. Meldman, Chairman and CEO of Discovery Land Company. The partners will provide immediate aid, bringing heavy equipment to the island to assist in the cleanup and rebuilding efforts. Some of the specific initiatives will include:

  • A $10,000,000 fund to rebuild local residences and to construct new housing complexes
  • The construction of a $1,000,000 triage medical center on Barbuda
  • A $1,000,000 contribution to the rebuilding of local schools
  • A $3,500,000 lagoon and beach restoration project which will include mangrove restoration, implementation of stormwater management solutions in the Town of Codrington, and ongoing lagoon management program
  • An additional $5,000,000 contribution to a new airport on Barbuda
  • The purchase of 500-750 beds for shelters and other temporary housing units

Further, to benefit all residents of the island, the partners will coordinate with other disaster relief partners to help provide clean water, dry goods and medical supplies to those affected by the hurricane.

Finally, to ensure the island is well positioned moving forward, the partners are motivated to immediately advance development plans, which will create future jobs, advance sustainable infrastructure solutions, support environmental initiatives and provide new business opportunities for the citizens of Barbuda.
