Judge Anthony J. Scirica to Receive the 2017 American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the Third Circuit

ALEXANDRIA, Va.--()--Judge Anthony J. Scirica has been selected to receive the prestigious 2017 American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the Third Circuit. Scirica will be presented with the award by the Chief Judge D. Brooks Smith and Judge Kent A. Jordan at the Third Circuit Judicial Conference in Lancaster, PA, on April 19.

Scirica was chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit from 2003 to 2010 and took senior status in 2013. He is a member of the Council of the American Law Institute and a senior fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he teaches courses on civil procedure. Before moving to the Court of Appeals, he was a judge on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, appointed by President Ronald Reagan. Previously, Scirica practiced law and served the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a judge on the Court of Common Pleas (Montgomery County) and as a state representative.

Throughout his career, Scirica has been extensively involved with the Judicial Conference of the United States. He currently serves as chair of the Committee on Judicial Conduct and Disability. Formerly, he served as chair of the Executive Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States, the Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure, and the Working Group on Mass Torts. In 2010, he received the federal judiciary’s highest honor, the Edward J. Devitt Distinguished Service to Justice Award.

A graduate of Wesleyan University, Scirica earned his juris doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School. He was a Fulbright Scholar at Central University in Venezuela.
