HDR and Black & White Photography Focus of Latest Focal Press Book

Photographer and artist Harold Davis offers comprehensive guidebook to shooting and processing black and white, high dynamic range (HDR) photos

BURLINGTON, Mass.--()--Focal Press, a leading publisher of media technology books, announced the availability of “Monochromatic HDR Photography” by Harold Davis, an award-winning photographer and best-selling author of more than 30 books. The book is currently available for pre-order and will hit the shelves Oct. 7.

In this beautifully illustrated guide for all levels from advanced amateur to professional, Davis shows photographers how to work at the intersection of two hot trends of the digital revolution: Black & White and High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging.

“Monochromatic HDR Photography” shows techniques for extending dynamic range—including photo bracketing and post-processing techniques—and the best monochromatic conversion methods and how to get the most out of them. It also describes best practices and uses flow diagrams to visually detail the steps needed during the monochromatic conversion process.

In addition, “Monochromatic HDR Photography” provides extensive coverage of the creative vision required to create extraordinary black and white imagery, describing how to pre-visualize monochromatic images before pressing the shutter. The book then goes on to show how to successfully process images—from initial work with extending the range of lights and darks in the color image, through the monochromatic conversion process again extending the dynamic range, and then on to a discussion of fine art print making.

“The purpose of this book is to show you how you can stop the photo ‘blahs’ and create the powerful images that correspond to what you see in your mind’s eye,” Davis said. “In this book I let you in on a powerful secret of digital workflow: how to turn average photos into compelling works of black and white art.”

Davis is a well-known digital artist and professional photographer. Also a popular presenter on digital photography topics, his workshops are often sold out. He is celebrated for his night photography and experimental ultra-long exposure techniques, use of vibrant, saturated colors in landscape compositions, and beautiful creative floral imagery. He writes the popular Photoblog 2.0, www.photoblog2.com, and is a monthly columnist for Photo.net and Peachpit.com.

Davis has been recognized as a Moab Master for his hand-crafted fine art prints. His bestselling photography books include, “Photographing Flowers,” “Photographing Waterdrops,” and “The Photoshop Darkroom,” all published by Focal Press.
