Kyoto Fusioneering to Provide Gyrotrons for Type One Energy's Infinity One Stellarator

Kyoto Fusioneering will design, test and deliver 170 GHz gyrotron systems for the electron cyclotron heating system of Infinity One, Type One Energy’s stellarator engineering prototype in East Tennessee

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Kyoto Fusioneering Ltd. (“KF”) today announced an agreement under which Kyoto Fusioneering will supply gyrotron systems for the electron cyclotron heating (ECH) system of Infinity One, Type One Energy’s stellarator engineering prototype at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Bull Run site in East Tennessee.

Infinity One is designed to support performance testing of critical stellarator fusion systems and components ahead of Infinity Two, Type One Energy’s planned 400 MWe commercial fusion power plant. A key element of Infinity One is the ECH system, which uses high-power microwaves generated by gyrotrons to heat the plasma. Because stellarators do not require plasma rotation for stability or confinement, fusion ignition can be reached using ECH as the only heating method.

Under the agreement, Kyoto Fusioneering will be responsible for the design, manufacturing, factory acceptance testing (FAT) and transport of 170 GHz, 1 MW-class gyrotron systems. KF will also supervise installation and site acceptance testing (SAT) at the Infinity One site. The systems will be built and tested in Japan at KF’s Shiga Innovation Factory (SIF), drawing on Japan’s industrial supply chain. Deliveries are scheduled to be completed in 2029.

"Our strategy is to partner with qualified, established manufacturers wherever feasible,” said Thomas Sunn Pedersen, Chief Technology Officer of Type One Energy. “Kyoto Fusioneering's leadership in gyrotrons allows us to focus our engineering efforts on advancing other parts of our optimized stellarator and integrating critical plant technologies for commercial deployment."

“We are honored that Type One Energy has entrusted us with gyrotron systems for Infinity One,” said Kiyoshi Seko, Representative Director, President & COO of Kyoto Fusioneering. “As fusion developers move from research toward building machines on the path to commercial power plants, delivering components with consistent quality and on schedule matters as much as performance. We are committed to Infinity One’s success, and we are expanding our gyrotron production capacity so that the supply base is in place before fusion power plants need it.”

About Type One Energy

Type One Energy Group is a fusion technology OEM. It provides stellarator technology, together with plant design and integration, for commercial fusion power plants. Working with established energy, industrial, and government partners, the company applies a proven energy-industry business model to fusion to reduce its capital cost, allocate risk to those best able to manage it, and shorten the path to commercial operation. Its first deployment, Infinity Two, is a 400 MWe power plant being developed at Bull Run, Tennessee Valley Authority’s retired coal-fired power station site in Eastern Tennessee.
