Velotic CEO Outlines Practical Path to Measurable Value in Industrial AI

New framework introduces the Industrial AI Value Cube, a framework to help industrial leaders identify high-value opportunities, prioritize investments, and plan for scale

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Velotic, an independent industrial software company bringing together Kepware, Proficy, and ThingWorx, today introduced the Industrial AI Value Cube, a practical framework to help industrial organizations identify high-value AI opportunities, prioritize investments and plan how to scale intelligence across their operations.

"Industrial operations are one of the hardest environments in which to deploy AI, but also one of the most valuable places to succeed," said Shepherd.

Introduced in The Journey to Value in Industrial AI, a new executive paper by Velotic CEO Brian Shepherd, the framework addresses a central challenge facing industrial leaders: moving beyond isolated AI pilots to improvements that can be measured and repeated. Shepherd argues that achieving this requires more than technology, it demands leadership, trusted operational data, and a clear connection between intelligence, decisions, and action.

"Industrial operations are one of the hardest environments in which to deploy AI, but also one of the most valuable places to succeed," said Shepherd. "A pilot can prove what's possible. The real opportunity comes when you scale that intelligence across production lines, plants, and the enterprise. This turns operational knowledge into better decisions, action, and measurable business results."

Shepherd draws on real-world deployments across manufacturing and critical infrastructure to demonstrate how connected industrial intelligence delivers measurable operational value and establishes a foundation for Industrial AI.

At Papa Johns, the world’s third-largest pizza delivery company, Velotic helped modernize paper-based manufacturing processes through real-time production monitoring, data aggregation, and quality management. Initially deployed at one plant, the solution expanded across all 11 manufacturing centers. Quality audits that once took a week can now be completed in just three clicks.

Church & Dwight, a manufacturer of consumer brands, reported a 6% improvement in overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) using Velotic. The City of Mesa Water Resources Department used Velotic to provide secure, self-service access to operational data, reducing demands on engineering teams and delivering chemical-usage savings of up to 50% in some cases.

The Industrial AI Value Cube connects three dimensions of AI investment: where value can be created (production, assets and compliance), the level of intelligence required (descriptive through prescriptive) and the scale of deployment (individual lines or cells through enterprise-wide operations). By evaluating these dimensions together, industrial leaders can identify where to start, make informed investment decisions, and plan how to expand AI applications across their operations.

Beyond the framework, Shepherd identifies five foundations for scaling Industrial AI: the right tool for the job; a real industrial data foundation; AI in the right place and at the right cost; trustworthy by design; and autonomous or augmented. These address the technology, data, economics, governance, and human expertise needed to scale.

"Industry doesn't get to pause while it changes," Shepherd added. "The measure of Industrial AI isn't how sophisticated the technology is. It's whether organizations can produce more, get more from their assets and stay in control as they evolve. That's where the value has to show up."

Velotic's Kepware, Proficy and ThingWorx software suites connect industrial systems, contextualize operational data, and enable applications and workflows that turn intelligence into action. Together, they support a continuous Industrial Intelligence loop – from signals and trusted history to understanding, decisions, execution, and learning. Industrial AI increases the intelligence moving through that loop.
