Splight Dynamic Congestion Manager Unlocks 60% More Transmission Capacity for Key Corridors on Chile’s National Grid Without Building a Single New Line

Project validates ability of Splight DCM™ to leverage untapped transmission capacity

DCM now operates on 878 MW of wind generation in real time on two of Chile’s main southern corridors, adding roughly 41,000 MWh of clean energy per year, enough to supply around 20,000 homes annually

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Splight, the grid infrastructure technology company, today announced that its Dynamic Congestion Manager (DCM) is live on Chile’s National Electric System (SEN), where it powers the country’s first AI-based automatic transfer control scheme. The deployment has increased usable transmission capacity by 60 percent on the Mulchén–Santa Clara and Santa Clara–Charrúa 2x220 kV corridors spanning the Biobío and La Araucanía regions, achieving this additional capacity without the need for any additional transmission infrastructure.

The system continuously assesses 878 MW across seven wind farms operated by ACCIONA Energía, Enel Green Power and WPD in Chile’s wind-rich south – San Gabriel, Tolpán Sur, Renaico I & II, La Cabaña and Malleco Norte & Sur – several of which are among the largest in Chile. Wind farms in this region are routinely forced to curtail clean energy because of transmission limits. These limits are static and based on worst-case operating assumptions. They leave large amounts of capacity in reserve and cannot dynamically adjust to realize the grid’s true real-time capacity. DCM gives grid operators this capability and frees up unused capacity.

With DCM in operation to overcome this constraint, the corridors are expected to deliver approximately 41,000 MWh of additional renewable generation per year, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of around 20,000 Chilean homes, while lowering energy costs for consumers. Acciona estimates that this will deliver up to a total of 239GWh of additional clean generation over the project’s study window.

DCM addresses two of the grid’s most urgent problems: congestion and curtailment. In 2025, Chile’s transmission constraints forced the system to curtail over 6,000 GWh of renewable energy, 8 percent more than the year before, equivalent to the annual consumption of roughly 2.5 million homes in the region. New lines take a decade or more to build; DCM recovers lost capacity from infrastructure that already exists, in months.

Reliability first. Capacity as a result.

DCM is an operational, real-time reliability layer that replaces static grid operational logic with continuous enforcement of the same reliability standards, computed for the actual grid conditions present at every moment. It is already operating across 3 GW of generation capacity globally.

DCM combines grid data with Splight's sophisticated AI algorithms to assess conditions and capacity in real time. It rapidly corrects contingencies, working together with existing grid protection layers like relays and breakers. It unlocks the true capacity of the system while maintaining reliability.

The deployment was designed, validated, and integrated under the rigorous security and reliability procedures of Chile’s national system operator, the Coordinador Eléctrico Nacional, together with each corridor’s full ecosystem: generators ACCIONA Energía — which led the implementation — Enel Green Power and WPD; transmission companies Transelec, Ferrovial, Saesa, Celeo and Transmisora Sur Andes. The Universidad de Santiago de Chile (Usach) contributed digital-twin research, proving that AI-driven transfer control meets the strictest operational standards of a national interconnected system.

“Chile just proved what we have been saying for years: the fastest new transmission line is the one you already own,” said Fernando Llaver, CEO & co-founder of Splight. “DCM gives the grid eyes and reflexes — enforcing the same reliability standard every second, for the real conditions on the wires. The reward is corridors carrying 60 percent more clean power. Reliability isn’t the cost of that capacity. It’s the source of it.”

“This advanced grid digitalization project allows us to maximize the use of existing transmission infrastructure to integrate more renewable energy safely and efficiently,” said Jaime Toledo, CEO of ACCIONA Energía for South America. “It is an innovative answer that expands the capacity to transport energy without building new transmission lines, lowering energy costs for consumers while reducing greenhouse gas emissions through less fossil-fuel generation.”

A template for congested grids everywhere

Chile’s southern corridors highlight a global problem. In the United States, congestion costs in the PJM market alone reached $3.2 billion in 2025 — up 81 percent year over year according to the PJM Independent Market Monitor. Nationwide congestion was an estimated $17 billion in 2025, while 2.2 TW of projects sit stalled in interconnection queues, unable to serve the country’s growing data center demand. DCM can reduce costs for consumers and help new loads get connected fast. New transmission takes 10–15 years to permit and build, whereas a DCM deployment goes from contract to operation on existing transmission infrastructure in roughly 6–10 months.

About Splight

Splight is a grid infrastructure technology company headquartered in San Francisco, CA, with offices in Texas, Chile, and Spain. Its flagship product, the Dynamic Congestion Manager (DCM™), safely unlocks more transmission capacity to accelerate the deployment of clean energy and the interconnection of new large loads. Splight works with utilities, renewables developers, system operators, and large loads to shorten interconnection timelines, increase reliability, and maximize the use of existing infrastructure. Splight’s technology operates today on more than 3 GW of grid infrastructure across 30+ utilities in the United States, Europe and Latin America.
