Allonnia Receives Defense Innovation Unit Success Memo for SAFF® PFAS Treatment Technology

Successful Department of War demonstration creates a streamlined path for federal agencies to deploy SAFF® for PFAS-impacted water treatment

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Allonnia today announced that it has successfully completed a prototype project for the Surface Active Foam Fractionation (SAFF®) technology with the Department of War (DoW) Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) and the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). Completion of the project allows the DoW to award follow-on contracts or Other Transactions (OT) to Allonnia for the SAFF® technology without the use of competitive procedures.

The successful completion of this project is an important milestone for SAFF® and for federal sites seeking proven, commercially available options to address PFAS-impacted waters. Particularly for installations facing long-term PFAS remediation requirements, the designation provides a more direct path from remedial investigation to remedial action.

“Federal agencies have spent significant time and resources evaluating technologies that can reliably address PFAS at the scale and under the complex conditions found at impacted sites,” said Dr. Kent Sorenson, Chief Technology Officer at Allonnia and Principal Investigator for the project. “This Success Memo gives DoW agencies another way to move from evaluation to action, backed by real-world performance under DoW site conditions and constraints.”

Allonnia completed the prototype project following their participation in a PFAS remediation initiative funded by DoW’s ESTCP in partnership with DIU, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Navy. At Biddle Air National Guard Base in Pennsylvania, SAFF® treated more than 4.2 million gallons of PFAS-impacted groundwater during a six-month pilot test. Under optimized conditions, the system removed more than 98% of total regulated PFAS while concentrating the captured PFAS into only 149 gallons, demonstrating a 124,000x volumetric concentration factor.

This ESTCP project builds on Allonnia’s broader work with the U.S. government, including contracts to deploy SAFF® at more than 15 government sites across the nation. At the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Michigan, another ESTCP-funded project paired SAFF® with a supercritical water oxidation process to demonstrate on-site PFAS removal, concentration, and destruction. SAFF® treated more than 700,000 gallons of groundwater and removed more than 99% of regulated PFAS, highlighting its role as a flexible treatment technology for PFAS remediation.

DoW agencies can partner with Allonnia to accelerate treatment of PFAS-impacted water sites using SAFF®, a proven, commercial off-the-shelf technology, through a follow-on standing OT or contract vehicle.
