IGEN and Vertex Unite Excise and Global Indirect Tax in a Single Solution

Combining specialized excise expertise with global indirect tax capabilities helps enterprises simplify complex tax processes and strengthen compliance

APPLETON, Wis.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--IGEN, an industry leader in excise tax compliance automation, today announced an expansion of its strategic collaboration with Vertex, Inc., the Decision-to-Defense™ global indirect tax and compliance company. Together, the companies are bringing to the market a joint solution for a persistent challenge for tax teams: managing excise and global indirect tax as a single, connected process rather than as separate workstreams.

For enterprises in highly regulated industries, such as oil and gas and tobacco, tax complexity extends across products, transactions, and jurisdictions. A single transaction can carry multiple tax obligations, each governed by different rules, rates, exemptions, and reporting requirements. Managing those obligations across separate systems adds manual work and makes it hard to maintain consistent tax records. Errors or gaps can affect financial reporting, increase audit exposure, and lead to costly corrections.

IGEN and Vertex combine complementary expertise to address that challenge. IGEN provides excise tax calculation built around the product, movements, and regulatory requirements of fuel and tobacco businesses. Vertex brings global capabilities across sales and use tax (SUT), value-added tax (VAT), and goods and services tax (GST).

The initial integration adds IGEN’s excise tax calculation into Vertex's SAP-certified connector, so enterprises modernizing on SAP S/4HANA can calculate excise and other indirect taxes in a single transaction flow. Using an existing SAP connection can reduce the need for a separate integration project, while the shared flow supports reconciliation and audit preparation. Future integrations with additional ERP systems are planned.

“There is a clear gap in the market that IGEN and Vertex are uniquely positioned to solve,” said Ryan Padget, president of IGEN. “We’ve been providing shared coverage to clients for many years. It was clear in listening to our clients that they would benefit from a joint solution that also addresses a growing demand in the market.”

"This collaboration brings together IGEN's deep excise expertise and Vertex's indirect tax solutions so customers can manage their obligations through a more connected approach, starting with SAP," said Chirag Patel, chief strategy officer at Vertex. "It gives customers more complete indirect tax coverage and is an important step in our strategy to serve highly regulated industries. We look forward to building on it together."

The SAP integration marks an initial step in the expanded collaboration. IGEN’s industry expertise and Vertex’s global technology ecosystem provide a foundation for broader connectivity across enterprise systems as customers’ operations and compliance needs evolve.
