Gainbridge Launches Gainbridge: Flex℠ and Gainbridge: Retirement Flex℠, Guaranteed-Rate Savings Starting at $100

New annuities let members start with $100, add money over time and choose terms from one to 10 years, without paying commissions

ZIONSVILLE, Ind.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Gainbridge, one of the largest issuer of annuities without agents or commissions, today announced the launch of Gainbridge: Flex℠ (“Flex”) and Gainbridge: Retirement Flex℠ (“Retirement Flex”), two flexible premium deferred fixed annuities.

Flex helps people save for goals outside of retirement, from a down payment or wedding to a major purchase or extended trip. Retirement Flex offers the same flexible structure for retirement savings as is available as a traditional IRA, Roth IRA, or other non-qualified contract. Both products allow people to open an account with as little as $100, make additional contributions of $50 or more and choose guaranteed terms ranging from one to 10 years.

Flex competes for the money that savers currently hold in certificates of deposit (CDs) and high-yield savings accounts. The large majority of CD balances sit in terms of one year or less, a range the annuities industry has largely passed over in favor of multi-year retirement horizons. Flex guaranteed terms start at one year.

Younger savers are starting earlier and putting away money in smaller amounts, often toward several goals at once, from saving for an emergency fund, a major purchase, debt repayment, to vacations. Having grown up with digital platforms, they expect flexibility and ease in all financial transactions — savings being no different. Flex and Retirement Flex are built for this reality, letting younger savers put away money the way they want to - start with $100, add money whenever you have it, and build a ladder of your own terms instead of locking everything into one all-or-nothing decision.

“Traditionally, most annuities were designed for people approaching retirement with a significant lump sum to invest,” said Derek Towriss, president of Gainbridge. “Flex and Retirement Flex start from a different premise. Members can start with an amount that works for them, keep contributing as they save and choose terms that reflect when they will need their money.”

Unlike many traditional fixed annuities that require a one-time premium, Flex and Retirement Flex allow members to continue adding money to an existing account without filling out a new application each time. Members can also divide their savings across multiple fixed-term buckets, each with its own guaranteed rate (for the length of that guaranteed term), start date and maturity date. Interest rates are not blended across buckets, which makes it possible to create a personalized savings ladder, with some money becoming available sooner while other funds earn a guaranteed rate over a longer period of time.

Accounts can be opened completely online, with funds earning interest as soon as the next business day. In the traditional agent-sold model, the same process can take weeks.

Flex is designed for non-retirement savings. Members can select guaranteed terms that match the timing of their goals, starting with a one-year commitment, while avoiding the market volatility associated with stocks and other investments. Flex does not offer tax deferral. Interest earned is generally taxable each year, whether or not it’s withdrawn, similar to interest on a certificate of deposit held outside a retirement account.

Retirement Flex applies the same flexible approach to retirement savings. Members can make ongoing contributions and spread their savings across guaranteed terms with different maturity dates. Earnings generally grow tax-deferred, and the amount of tax due at withdrawal depends on how the annuity is held. Members can open a new account or fund it through an eligible IRA rollover, retirement-plan rollover or 1035 exchange, with support from Gainbridge’s U.S.-based team throughout the process.

Both products also include a Cash Wallet, a liquid holding area where unallocated funds earn a variable interest rate without surrender charges or a market value adjustment. Members can generally withdraw up to 10 percent of their total account value, across their guaranteed terms and Cash Wallet, annually without surrender charges, subject to contract terms and applicable tax rules.

The launch reflects Gainbridge’s structural difference from the rest of the category. Most annuities are sold through commission-based agents who earn at the point of sale. Gainbridge earns nothing on the sale. Its revenue comes from the spread between what it earns on its own investments and what it has guaranteed members, which means the business depends on members staying.

“The barriers to annuities were never really about the product. They were about how it was sold,” said Shannon Reynolds, Director of Member Experience at Gainbridge. “We took out the agent and the commission, and we kept the person. A U.S.-based support team is there to provide education whenever a member wants to talk to a person rather than an app. With a $100 minimum and terms starting at one year, that combination makes guaranteed savings practical for a lot more people.”
