SimpleClosure and Intuit QuickBooks Partner to Help Businesses Stay Compliant When Closing Payroll Tax Accounts

Partnership provides guided path in QuickBooks Workforce for seamless and compliant closure of payroll-related tax accounts in less than 10 minutes, with access to broader dissolution services as needed

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SimpleClosure, the industry standard for responsible company shutdowns, today announced a partnership with Intuit, the global financial technology platform that makes TurboTax, Credit Karma, QuickBooks, Mailchimp, Intuit Enterprise Suite, and Intuit Accountant Suite, to help QuickBooks Workforce customers properly close state payroll tax accounts when they stop running payroll. For customers who are shutting down their business entirely, the partnership also provides easy access to SimpleClosure dissolution services, which includes handling the 95+ moving parts of a shutdown.

Payroll tax accounts can remain open even after active payroll stops. This discrepancy can leave business owners responsible for ongoing filing requirements, and exposed to notices, fees and penalties not on their radar. SimpleClosure helps to manage the closing of these accounts, whether due to operational changes like workforce restructuring, a transition to a Professional Employer Organization (PEO), or no longer employing workers in a specific state, in addition to business closure.

With more than 100 state tax agencies and thousands of local agencies across the U.S., requirements for closing these accounts vary widely by location, and business owners are often left to determine on their own which accounts need to be closed, where to file, and what steps are required. Through this partnership, QuickBooks Workforce customers will have access to SimpleClosure's guided experience and can securely transfer their company and state payroll tax account details from QuickBooks to SimpleClosure, so they don't have to start from scratch. SimpleClosure then collects any necessary additional information from the customer and manages the state-specific closure process, typically in under 10 minutes.1

"Payroll software has made it easy to start payroll in minutes, but closing payroll is not a simple flip of the switch. It is a fragmented process, convoluted by various individual state and federal taxes,” said Dori Yona, founder and CEO of SimpleClosure. “By partnering with Intuit, we enable their QuickBooks Workforce customers to complete the entire offboarding cycle at exactly the moment they need it, and mitigate their risk of being blindsided by unforeseen fees and penalties in the future."

"Closing out payroll tax accounts is a manual, multi-step process that is often challenging for small and mid-market businesses to navigate,” said Olivier Bartholot, vice president, workforce solutions, Intuit QuickBooks. “Integrating SimpleClosure directly into QuickBooks Workforce turns that process into a seamless, done-for-you experience that helps reduce the research, guesswork, and risk of surprise penalties down the road. This integration is a natural extension of how we’re continuing to expand our workforce solutions to provide the right tools to support businesses through the entire company lifecycle."

SimpleClosure is currently partnered with several payroll providers operating in the U.S. and has closed approximately 14,000 payroll tax accounts for more than 7,000 customers to date.

Based on data from a test of 4,000 SimpleClosure customers, conducted in August 2026. On average, it takes 7.3 minutes to complete onboarding and close at least one state tax account. The average time it takes to close additional state payroll tax accounts is 20 seconds. On average, a customer has 1.5 state tax account IDs to close.
