Wolf & Company Expands Tax Services with Launch of State & Local Tax Practice, Welcomes Shakeb Syed as Principal

Syed joins firm to help clients navigate multistate tax complexity, manage compliance risk, and identify strategic tax planning opportunities

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Wolf & Company, P.C., a nationally recognized accounting and consulting firm, today announced that Shakeb Syed has joined the firm as Principal and State and Local Tax (SALT) Lead. An attorney and tax advisor with nearly 20 years of experience, Syed will help clients manage state tax compliance, controversy, planning, and growth-related tax challenges across multiple jurisdictions. This also continues Wolf & Company's approach of offering a broad range of integrated services to clients facing increasingly complex financial and regulatory demands.

Prior to joining Wolf & Company, Syed held leadership positions across industry, consulting and middle-market advisory organizations, where he advised clients on complex multistate tax matters and helped them identify opportunities to manage risk, improve compliance, and enhance tax efficiency. His experience spans state income and franchise tax, tax controversy, and state credits and incentives, among others.

"Our clients are growing across state lines, and their tax obligations are growing with them," said Jerry Gagne, President & CEO of Wolf & Company. "Adding a dedicated SALT practice lets us support our mid-market clients across the full tax picture. We’re also thrilled to welcome Shakeb to the Wolf & Company team, as his proven record of building a robust and integrated SALT practice will inform the next phase of growth for our firm and our clients."

While federal tax has a single rulebook, state and local tax is among the hardest areas of compliance for growing businesses as each state abides by its own statutes, regulations and case law, often with county and city rules on top. U.S. businesses face more than 12,000 sales and use tax jurisdictions alone, and are actively bracing for regulatory changes, audits and enforcements in the future.

Syed’s integration into Wolf & Company comes as states navigate federal tax changes, face mounting budget pressure, and amend their sales tax strategies across categories. For companies adding headcount or remote employees in new states, growing interstate and e-commerce sales, or pursuing acquisitions and new locations, these shifts can create unexpected exposure. The practice helps clients get ahead of that risk by identifying nexus early, modeling the state impact of federal changes, and capturing credits and incentives tied to expansion. Syed will work alongside Wolf & Company principals to bring a state tax view into client engagements from the start, making SALT part of growth planning rather than an afterthought.

"State and local tax considerations increasingly influence major business decisions, from hiring and expansion to acquisitions and investment," said Shakeb Syed, Principal at Wolf & Company. "With state budgets under pressure and states still reacting to recent federal tax changes, businesses are dealing with real uncertainty. Our goal is to help clients proactively manage risk, identify opportunities, and make informed decisions that support their long-term business objectives. When approached strategically, SALT can be more than a compliance obligation; it can be a source of meaningful value."

The SALT Advisory Practice serves privately held, middle-market, and multinational businesses, as well as business owners and high-net-worth individuals navigating complex state tax issues. Services include:

  • State Income & Franchise Tax Planning and Compliance
  • Sales & Use Tax Advisory, Nexus Reviews, and Audit Defense
  • State Tax Controversy and Audit Support
  • State Credits, Incentives, and Site Selection Advisory
  • Residency, Domicile, and State Tax Planning for Business Owners, Executives, and High-Net-Worth Individuals
  • Transaction, Expansion, and Multistate Tax Planning

The practice draws on Wolf & Company's deep experience in financial services, banking and digital assets. State tax treatment in these areas is often evolving, and clients need advisors who understand both each industry and its applicable tax law.
