Introducing Toast Fuel, Powering Convenience Stores From the Counter to the Pump
Toast Fuel brings fuel payments, in-store retail, and foodservice onto a unified cloud-native platform
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Toast (NYSE: TOST), the digital technology platform built for restaurants and retail, today announced Toast Fuel, a new set of capabilities for fuel operators and convenience stores. With Toast Fuel, operators can run fuel payments, both in-store and at the pump, alongside retail and foodservice on a single, connected platform.
Convenience stores sell an estimated 80% of the fuel purchased by consumers in the United States, according to the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS)1. Many of those convenience store operators run their in-store retail and fuel businesses on two disconnected systems, and have had little access to the cloud-based tools that have helped reshape restaurants and retailers over the past decade. At the same time, convenience stores increasingly operate like quick-service restaurants (QSRs), pairing made-to-order food, digital ordering, and loyalty programs with traditional fuel and retail sales.
As that convergence accelerates, Toast, which already serves a large base of retail and restaurant operators, is extending its proven cloud-native platform to the forecourt, bringing pump control onto the same system already powering the store, so fuel, retail, payments, foodservice, marketing, inventory, and team management run in one place.
"Foodservice and retail are blurring together, and the convenience store offers one of the clearest examples of this trend: the customer expects to buy gas, a coffee, and groceries in one stop," said Omri Traub, Chief Operating Officer of Retail at Toast. "Toast Fuel unifies that entire experience on a single platform. We're bringing the same innovation powering the country's best restaurants and retailers to c-store operators, giving them the modern tools they’ve long deserved so they can focus on delivering great customer experiences rather than managing their tech."
Integrated into one unified, cloud-native platform for fuel, food, and retail, Toast Fuel offers:
- Support for key fuel workflows: Toast Fuel gives cashiers a dedicated forecourt interface, including a real-time pump dashboard, the ability to authorize or stop a pump, and the fuel-specific transactions operators run all day: prepayment by cash or card, Rest in Gas, and Move Prepay. At the dispenser, Toast Fuel supports EMV-certified payments and fleet card acceptance, including distinct cash and credit prices at the pump. An offline mode keeps transactions moving at the pump and in-store if the internet connection drops.
- Tools for every kind of food program: Operators ring up fuel alongside in-store purchases, from coffee and grab-and-go items to made-to-order foods, all from a single screen, or from self-checkout kiosks for faster in-store transactions. For sites running a more robust food program, Toast Fuel adds the same trusted kitchen automation technology built for Toast’s approximately 180,000 customer locations, including kitchen display systems, digital menus, online ordering, delivery, drive-thru, and handhelds.
- One cloud-native operating system, from forecourt to back office: Seamlessly connect data from the pump, POS, checkout, kitchen, and online ordering through Toast Web, the back office built into Toast's platform, reducing reliance on third-party systems.
- AI-powered business insights with Toast IQ: Toast IQ, Toast's conversational AI assistant, draws on an operator's own data across fuel, retail, and foodservice, with no separate reporting tool required. Operators can ask Toast IQ in plain language about their fuel and in-store margins down to the SKU, or whether there's enough coffee and roller-grill stock to get through a holiday weekend—from behind the counter or on mobile devices.
- Products to help grow demand: Fuel brings customers to the site; loyalty and food keep them coming back. Toast IQ Grow, Toast’s complete marketing solution, brings the marketing engine built for restaurants and retailers to convenience, helping run the ads, email, and SMS campaigns that promote meal deals and drink specials, turning a fill-up into a store visit. Once inside, loyalty, gift cards, and foodservice help drive repeat visits, without adding another vendor.
-
White-glove services: Fuel equipment is specialized, and getting it installed correctly the first time matters. Toast is partnering with OWL™ Services, a leading distributor and service provider with deep experience installing and servicing fuel dispensers, to handle onsite installation logistics, while Toast's own onboarding and support teams guide operators through the software setup. End-to-end support includes:
- A dedicated onboarding consultant: An expert helps set up Toast Web, confirms pricing and product data are accurate, and prepares the site for go-live.
- Training built for the team: Operators and staff get access to Toast's training library and live sessions, designed to get teams comfortable running fuel, retail, and food together from day one.
- Onsite installation and go-live support: Toast's installation partner provides onsite installation and support on the day a site goes live, plus the option for continued onsite support in the days after.
- Ongoing, around-the-clock care: Support continues after go-live with 24/7/365 support from people who understand both fuel operations and point of sale software.
Sunni Nichols, Owner of Indian Mound Grocery & Deli in Greenwell Springs, Louisiana, said the platform has simplified how the team works day to day and connected operations that used to run separately. "For us, the greatest value of Toast is the general ease-of-use and how it’s helping us to be more efficient all across the board. We use the POS to make our transactions more connected from the pump to the counter. The robust reporting and Toast IQ also helps me to identify best sellers and better manage inventory. Having one system that connects our fuel, deli, and store operations is a huge advantage."
Built for unbranded, independent fuel and convenience operators, Toast Fuel is available now for operators in the United States connected through an integration with Allied Electronics' NeXGen PRIME forecourt controller, with support for additional dispensers and payment capabilities planned later in 2026. Toast will demo Toast Fuel at the NACS Show in Las Vegas, October 6-9, 2026, at Booth C6201. To learn more about Toast Fuel, visit http://pos.toasttab.com/products/fuel.
