Terminal Releases 2026 State of Remote Engineering Report, Revealing AI Fluent Engineers Face Rising Burnout and Retention Risk
New research reveals a workforce that has gone all in on AI, even as burnout climbs and retention risk grows for global engineering teams.
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Terminal, the smarter global talent platform for hiring developers, released its seventh annual State of Remote Engineering Report, a comprehensive look at how software engineers and employers are adapting to AI. Drawing on survey data from more than 1,800 engineers worldwide, the 2026 report reveals how deeply engineers have integrated AI into their daily work and examines what that shift means for burnout, retention, and hiring.
77% of engineers say AI adds capacity, yet 42% report more burnout.

“AI isn’t optional anymore. It’s the default way to build,” said Dylan Serota, CEO of Terminal. “Engineers have adapted faster than most of their employers. Now companies need to catch up with practical AI training, realistic workloads, and pay that reflects the value engineers deliver.”
Key Insights
Engineers Have Gone AI Native. 70.3% of engineers are now AI-enabled or AI-native under Terminal's AI Fluency standard, using AI to produce their code or letting agents handle it entirely. 37% qualify as AI-native, meaning they define the goal and let AI agents build, test, and ship the result. Just 3.3% still write all their code by hand.
AI Increases Capacity, Not Relief. 77% of engineers say AI has increased their capacity for higher value work, but 42% report more burnout than a year ago.
Most Engineers Still Support Careers in Tech. 75% of engineers feel confident in their future job prospects. 69% of engineers would encourage college students to pursue an engineering career, though that’s dipped 7 points since 2025.
US Engineers Bet on AI Hiring. 42% of US engineers say AI has already increased hiring at their company, and 53.9% expect AI to increase hiring going forward, but that view doesn’t hold globally.
Engineers Still Don't Trust AI to Hire Them. 56% of engineers have already been interviewed by AI, but 37% say it makes them less interested in an employer.
US Employers Can Close the AI Training Gap. US engineers are far more likely to get structured AI support from their employer, with 41% saying their company runs internal AI learning programs compared with just 25% in Latin America.
Why It Matters
The 2026 findings show an engineering workforce that has adapted to AI faster than expected, but that hasn't translated into less pressure. Engineers are shipping more, learning faster, and taking on higher value work, yet many are more burned out than a year ago and still expect to do more for the same pay. Career confidence remains high even as fewer engineers want to recommend the field, and most plan to look for new jobs in the next year.
Companies that want to keep and hire the best engineers will need to close the gap between what AI makes possible and what engineers actually experience day to day. That means implementing AI without raising output expectations faster than pay. It also means keeping humans in the hiring process, since most engineers still don't trust an AI interviewer to judge them fairly.
“If we want to keep the best engineers, the job has to get better, not just faster,” said Serota. “Top global engineers are drawn to building with AI. Companies that offer those opportunities, backed by training and enablement, will win over the best talent.”
