Girija Subramanian Named 2026 Vanguard Market Development Award Honoree

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The International Insurance Society (IIS) has named Smt. Girija Subramanian, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of The New India Assurance Co. Ltd., the 2026 Vanguard Market Development Award honoree. Subramanian will be formally acknowledged during the Global Insurance Forum, taking place Nov. 15–16, 2026, at the Lloyd’s building in London, England.

The Vanguard Market Development Award recognizes leaders who have made exceptional strides in advancing the development of insurance in an underserved market or emerging economy. Recipients are recognized for their innovative approaches, leadership and commitment to driving positive change. Nominees for the Vanguard Market Development Award are submitted by insurance executives and evaluated for selection by the IIS Executive Council, a body of senior insurance executives representing all sectors of insurance across a broad range of markets.

Subramanian is a distinguished insurance leader with more than three decades of experience in the Indian insurance sector. Since beginning her career as a Direct Recruit Officer at GIC Re in 1988, she has built a wide-ranging career spanning reinsurance, agriculture insurance, general insurance, institutional leadership, governance and market development.

Prior to leading New India Assurance, Subramanian served as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd., an institution central to India’s agriculture risk-protection ecosystem. She subsequently became Chairman-cum-Managing Director of New India Assurance, India’s largest public-sector general insurance company.

At New India Assurance, Subramanian has helped guide the organization through a period of significant transformation in India’s insurance sector. Her leadership has emphasized a role for the company that extends beyond business growth to supporting India’s financial inclusion agenda and the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India’s vision of “Insurance for All by 2047.”

Under her leadership, New India Assurance has placed renewed strategic focus on retail business, supported by efforts to strengthen distribution, customer accessibility, technology adoption, operational infrastructure and product relevance. These efforts reflect a long-term commitment to making insurance more accessible and responsive to the needs of households, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), businesses and emerging customer segments.

Throughout her career, Subramanian has demonstrated a deep commitment to the role of insurance as a social and economic stabilizer. Across her leadership positions, she has worked with public institutions, insurance professionals and other stakeholders to broaden protection, strengthen resilience and help ensure insurance remains relevant in a changing risk environment. She has also been appointed Whole-Time Member (Distribution) of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India, reflecting her continued contribution to the development of India’s insurance sector.
