Sola Launches EBT Chip Support to Help Protect Cardholders from Fraud and Benefit Theft

Enabling software partners to process new chip-enabled EBT cards while support remains limited across the market

BROOKLYN, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sola, a modern payments platform serving businesses and software partners, today announced EBT chip support for eligible integrations, enabling grocery software partners to help their merchants process new chip-enabled EBT cards as states transition to the more secure technology.

“Sola is delivering that capability while support remains limited across the market, giving our partners and their merchants an important advantage.”

Chip technology enhances the security of EBT transactions and helps protect cardholders from skimming, fraud, and benefit theft. States are beginning to make the transition. For example, New York plans to issue approximately 2 million chip-enabled EBT cards beginning in early 2027 and is encouraging retailers to update their systems and equipment in advance.

“As states transition to chip-enabled EBT cards, software partners need the technology to ensure their merchants can continue processing those transactions,” said Markiyan Malko, chief product officer at Sola. “Sola is delivering that capability while support remains limited across the market, giving our partners and their merchants an important advantage.”

This update expands Sola’s existing magstripe EBT capability to support the industry’s evolution to chip-enabled EBT cards. The capability is available through the latest version of Sola’s Payment Engine, the software that connects partner applications with supported payment devices. Existing magstripe EBT transactions will continue to be processed as software partners update their integrations and receipt formats to support chip acceptance.

The capability is initially available for integrated software partners using eligible configurations and supported Verifone Engage devices. Support is expected by the end of 2026 through Sola Terminal, Sola’s proprietary terminal application, which gives Sola full control over the experience and future capabilities.

“This release strengthens Sola’s position in an important market and demonstrates the value of moving early as payment requirements change,” said Sandra Blair, chief technology officer at Sola. “By responding to a changing security need now, we can deepen those relationships and help our partners remain ready for what comes next.”

Software partners can contact their Sola partner manager or email developersupport@solapayments.com for implementation support.
