BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Lightspun, the AI-powered dental insurance administration platform now supporting more than 175,000 providers nationwide, today announced a partnership with Specialty Dental Brands (SDB), a Nashville-based support organization for orthodontists, pediatric dentists, and oral surgeons, to automate provider onboarding and credentialing across its network of 300 providers in 25 states.

Since going live, SDB has cut provider onboarding from as long as 12 weeks to less than two weeks.

The problem the partnership solves:
Before a dentist can treat an insured patient or bill for the visit, every license, credential, and clinical record has to be verified. That takes 90 to 120 days. While the file sits in a queue, the dentist cannot see insured patients and the practice loses $6,000 to $8,000 a month on them. t is also fragile: up to 85% of initial enrollment applications contain missing or inconsistent data, and a single error triggers a 30 to 45 day delay that sends the whole application back to the start of the queue.

The financial toll on individual dentists is staggering. An analysis by TechTarget using U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data found that dentists lose up to $87,274 during a typical 120-day credentialing period, among the top three healthcare professions for monetary loss from credentialing delays.

And the cost lands on patients. When credentialing stalls, qualified dentists sit idle while appointment books stay empty and wait times grow. Students already miss more than 34 million school hours a year to unplanned dental care. For a child who needs an oral surgeon, an administrative queue becomes a barrier to care.

How Lightspun solves the credentialing and onboarding bottleneck:
Lightspun's AI-powered platform automates provider onboarding and credentialing through a partnership with the American Dental Association that gets providers into networks in days, not months. The ADA-enabled connection to CAQH, the provider data system the entire insurance industry runs on, pulls verified data straight from the source. A provider completes CAQH once and Lightspun handles the rest. No manual re-entry, no duplicate applications, no follow-up calls.

Speed only counts if the verification holds up. Lightspun is an NCQA-certified Credentialing Verification Organization, certified on all 11 verification services with zero audit findings. That certification is what lets insurance companies accept its verified credentials without checking the work again, so going faster never means cutting corners.

The result: Lightspun customers are reducing provider onboarding from months to less than a week and cutting administrative costs in half. Dentists join insurance networks faster, patients get faster access to care, and dental offices spend less time buried in paperwork.

"We have gone from six to 12 weeks down to less than two weeks. Tracking provider onboarding and credentialing submissions has been a key component in streamlining internal processes as we continue to grow as an organization," said Hilary Dennis, Credentialing System Analyst at Specialty Dental Brands. "I have moved credentialing teams onto new software platforms 14 times in my career, and it is usually months of exported data, retraining, and bugs. This was one of the simplest ones I have run. The speed matters, but so does the support, especially when we run into challenges or request enhancements. With other vendors, a product change only happened if enough customers voted for it. Lightspun has built nearly every enhancement we asked for, and their team actually answers when we call.”

"The dental industry still runs on 1990s technology and fax machines, and credentialing should not keep a qualified dentist from treating patients for months," said Shaju Puthussery, co-founder and CEO of Lightspun. "SDB is building a national network across pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, and oral surgery. By replacing manual onboarding and insurance applications, its team can bring providers into the network faster and support that growth without adding administrative work."

The partnership comes amid rising pressure to modernize dental administration. The 2025 CAQH Index found $21 billion in potential savings if providers eliminate manual workflows, while new state laws require dental insurers to spend at least 83% of premiums on patient care, rather than overhead.
