Hirebotics Expands Cobot Reach and Flexibility with New Line Tracking and Linear Rail Capabilities at IMTS

Extending capabilities of the collaborative robots to automate the painting of moving parts and handle large, cumbersome materials lets manufacturers accomplish difficult tasks without changing experience or workflows

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Hirebotics today unveiled new extensions to its collaborative robot (cobot) systems that enable manufacturers to paint moving parts and reach large, difficult-to-handle materials and assemblies without changing existing workflows. Line tracking for Hirebotics’ Cobot Painter and modular linear rail capabilities for its family of cobot systems extend the working range of the cobots, giving manufacturers greater flexibility to automate conveyor-based finishing operations and projects requiring large parts while keeping the cobot experience simple, approachable and easy to deploy. Both technologies will be featured at IMTS 2026, September 14-19, in Booth 236341 (North Hall) at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Line tracking enables painting on moving production lines

For facilities where parts already travel through painting or finishing on a conveyor, requiring every part to stop or be removed for a stationary painting process can add handling, interrupt production flow and make automation harder to implement. Line tracking allows the Cobot Painter to follow the movement of a part and maintain its programmed painting path while the conveyor continues running. A sensor detects the arriving part and starts the operation automatically.

While traditional robotic line-tracking systems can require specialized programming and integration, Hirebotics’ offering operates within the same no-code, cloud-based Beacon platform experience used to teach and run the Cobot Painter.

The line tracking enables the Cobot Painter to:

  • Calibrate line tracking through Beacon, teaching the robot the direction and movement of the conveyor.
  • Detect conveyor movement using an encoder and sensor, providing the information the robot needs to respond to production in motion.
  • Maintain the programmed painting path relative to the moving part, automatically compensating as conveyor speed changes.
  • Automatically detect an arriving part, begin the programmed operation and follow the part as it travels through the robot’s working area.

“If parts already move through finishing on a line, manufacturers shouldn't have to stop that process just to accommodate the robot,” Bush added. “Line tracking allows the Cobot Painter to work with the way production already moves, while Beacon keeps setup approachable for the people actually running it.”

Linear rail extends cobot reach for large workpieces

Manufacturers rarely work with the same size parts that fit neatly within a single standardized robotic work envelope. While a Hirebotics cobot has a 68.9-inch reach, moving a 12-foot frame, a 20-foot structural assembly or a large weldment, for example, extends well beyond that envelope. Hirebotics customers already use configurations such as magnetic Magswitch mounting, inverted mounting and headstock-tailstock positioners to adapt their cobots to different applications. The new linear rail, available in 5-foot increments or custom lengths, adds another option by allowing the cobot to move along the length of a large workpiece and reach the next section of weldment or other process locations without repositioning the part.

Key features of the new Hirebotics linear rail include the ability to:

  • Extend the work envelope for large parts and assemblies. 5-foot increments or custom lengths allow manufacturers to extend the cobot’s working area beyond its nearly 140-inch fixed work envelope. This enables automation of larger workpieces without repeatedly repositioning the part.
  • Deploy one rail across multiple cobot applications. The linear rail is designed to work across Hirebotics applications, including welding, plasma cutting and painting, giving manufacturers another way to adapt automation to different processes and workpiece sizes.
  • Start with simple manual positioning immediately, with automated movement planned. The rail is available now with manual positioning, allowing manufacturers to extend cobot reach without the complexity of a traditional automated axis. Position verification within the Beacon platform is planned to guide operators through position changes, while a fully automated version is planned for the end of 2026 to move the cobot automatically between positions.
