RTX Partners With and Invests in Xcimer Energy to Develop Advanced Directed Energy Technology

  • Companies teaming to explore development of pulsed-laser defense systems

ARLINGTON, Va. & DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--RTX Ventures, the venture capital arm of RTX, has made a minority investment in laser fusion company Xcimer Energy Corporation (XEC) to support Xcimer’s development of scalable multi-kilojoule-class pulsed-laser technologies.

In addition to the investment, RTX and Xcimer have signed a teaming agreement to explore the integration and containerization of Xcimer’s pulsed-laser technologies into RTX’s defense systems, offering the U.S. military potential new directed energy capabilities to defeat airborne threats.

RTX’s investment directly strengthens Xcimer's laser fusion energy roadmap, which the US Department of Energy approved in June. Approval of Xcimer’s fusion pilot power plant design – part of the DOE’s Milestone-based Fusion Development Program – positions Xcimer as the frontrunner in the race to commercialize laser fusion power.

The core challenge in both laser fusion and laser defense is identical: building a laser that fires pulses repeatedly and reliably at a low cost per joule and is also mass-manufacturable, while being maintainable, energy efficient and reliable. The excimer laser system being developed by Xcimer is designed to meet these goals, ultimately delivering longer-range performance and greater effectiveness than current directed energy systems on the market.

“As the United States accelerates the development of next-generation air defense, the need for affordable and scalable directed energy systems has never been more urgent,” said Conner Galloway, co-founder, CEO and Chief Science Officer at Xcimer. “Our excimer-based laser technology offers the performance, speed and inherent scalability needed at a fraction of the cost and complexity of today’s systems. This investment from RTX Ventures will help us accelerate development and prove these advantages in real-world testing.”

Xcimer and RTX will explore the development of systems that combine Xcimer’s laser expertise with RTX’s decades of experience developing combat-proven defense technologies.

"We invest in and partner with companies that have the potential to disrupt the aerospace and defense industry because it spurs innovation and augments our own development efforts,” said RTX Chief Technology Officer Juan de Bedout. "We believe Xcimer’s pulsed-laser technology lines up perfectly with our expertise in areas like advanced sensing, command and control and air defense. Together we will explore how we can best integrate these technologies into advanced, scalable defense systems able to defeat a range of new and evolving threats.”
