IMAX Soars to Highest Grossing Summer Ever with $728 Million Worldwide — Up 73% Over Previous Record

Powered by Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, IMAX Network Captures Record 5.8% of the Summer’s Global Box Office on Just Over 1,800 Screens

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--IMAX Corporation soared to its highest grossing summer ever at the global box office with $728 million in worldwide receipts from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends — up a staggering 73% over its previous record set in 2023. Powered by the historic performance of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, the IMAX global network also delivered its greatest share ever of the overall box office from June through August, with 5.8% of the total on just over 1,800 screens worldwide.

Nolan’s mythic action epic continues to break new ground in IMAX, shattering virtually every IMAX record that lay in its path. The Odyssey is the highest grossing IMAX release of all time in IMAX with $485 million — earning nearly two times the second highest grossing IMAX release with weeks left to play in its initial run. IMAX screens now account for 30% of the film’s worldwide box office.

Most recently, in its eighth week of play, The Odyssey lifted IMAX to its highest grossing Labor Day Weekend ever. IMAX further extended its run to September 30 in 39 IMAX 70mm film locations worldwide to meet unprecedented fan demand.

“This summer has been one for the history books, as The Odyssey has illuminated a broader awakening around IMAX — in both our impact throughout culture and our commercial potential around the world,” said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. “We believe this moment will unlock new opportunities to engage with our growing legions of fans and grow our business, most immediately with the excellent slate of films ahead this year and into 2027.”

IMAX has projected a record $1.4 billion in global box office worldwide for 2026. The strong slate ahead for the year is highlighted by Dune: Part Three — which has already delivered among the highest IMAX pre-sales of all time still months away from its December debut — as well as Resident Evil, the first Filmed For IMAX release from red-hot horror auteur Zach Cregger; Digger, from Tom Cruise and Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu; Street Fighter and Godzilla Minus Zero, also Filmed For IMAX; and the theatrical exclusive of The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth from David Fincher, Quentin Tarantino, and Brad Pitt.
