AM Best Downgrades Credit Ratings of Himalayan Reinsurance Limited; Places Under Review With Negative Implications

SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AM Best has downgraded the Financial Strength Rating to B (Fair) from B+ (Good) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating to “bb+” (Fair) from “bbb-” (Good) of Himalayan Reinsurance Limited (Himalayan Re) (Nepal). Concurrently, AM Best has placed these Credit Ratings (ratings) under review with negative implications.

The ratings reflect Himalayan Re’s balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as very strong, as well as its adequate operating performance, limited business profile and marginal enterprise risk management.

These rating actions follow a delay in the availability of Himalayan Re’s audited financial statements and the ongoing investigation of the company by multiple regulatory and law enforcement entities in Nepal. These events have highlighted weaknesses in the company’s corporate governance and risk management capabilities.

The ratings will remain under review with negative implications pending the completion of the ongoing investigation and AM Best’s subsequent review of the outcome and its impact on Himalayan Re's credit rating fundamentals.

Ratings are communicated to rated entities prior to publication. Unless stated otherwise, the ratings were not amended subsequent to that communication.
