Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Powers IMAX to its Highest Grossing Month in Company History with $257 Million in July
The Odyssey Delivers $44 Million in Its Third Weekend, Becoming the Fastest Film in IMAX History to Surpass $200 Million in Global Box Office
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) achieved the highest grossing month in its more than 50-year history, generating $257 million at the global box office in July — 47% above its previous monthly record — as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey climbed to $221 million in total IMAX box office to date.
Universal Pictures' mythic action epic delivered $44.7 million in IMAX in its third weekend, becoming the fastest film in IMAX history to surpass $200 million in global IMAX box office and propelling the Company to its first-ever streak of three consecutive $50 million-plus global weekends. To date, IMAX has delivered more than 24% of the overall global box office for The Odyssey, and the film remains the only release ever to generate multiple $40 million-plus weekends in global IMAX box office.
The Odyssey already ranks as the Company's highest-grossing collaboration with Christopher Nolan of all time and its third-highest-grossing IMAX release ever, with major market debuts in China, Japan, and South Korea yet to come. With nearly $60 million in pre-sales for future showtimes and sellouts for weeks in advance, The Odyssey will continue to play in the IMAX global network through at least September 17.
“We are all witness to history with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which seems intent on shattering all IMAX box office records in its path as its journey at the box office and around the world continues,” said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. “The Odyssey is a singular achievement in filmmaking and its box office trajectory is no less groundbreaking; it continues to defy gravity in a way few films ever have, making it virtually impossible to predict how high it will ultimately soar.”
In North America, The Odyssey generated $22.1 million across 443 IMAX locations, representing a staggering 43% of the film's domestic box office. Internationally, the film earned $22.6 million across 450 IMAX locations, accounting for 26% of the international box office while becoming the highest grossing IMAX release of all time in 24 markets, including Mexico, Italy, Belgium, Turkey, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and India.
IMAX 70mm Film, the gold-standard 18K presentation available at just 41 IMAX locations worldwide, generated $5.1 million over the weekend, averaging $673,000 per location. To date, IMAX 70mm Film has generated $27.6 million globally, representing 12% of the film’s total IMAX box office. IMAX 70mm Film locations have extended The Odyssey into mid-September, with many recording sellouts weeks in advance.
The mythic action epic — for which IMAX developed a next-generation film camera and state-of-the-art technology enabling sync sound — is the first theatrical release shot entirely with IMAX Film Cameras. Christopher Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema collaborated with IMAX to develop The Keighley, a next-generation IMAX Film Camera, along with a new sound blimp compatible with multiple IMAX Film Cameras.
