ZipRecruiter Finds That as AI Adoption Rises, So Does Hiring

AI's arrival in the labor market is proving to be more growth engine than job killer: More than a third of employers (35%) say AI will increase their total headcount going forward

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--ZipRecruiter® (NYSE: ZIP), a leading online employment marketplace, released More Jobs, Higher Bar: The 2026 AI Employer Report, a new report on how AI is reshaping employer hiring plans and workplace expectations. Based on a survey of more than 1,000 U.S. employers, the report reveals that AI's arrival in the labor market has been more of a growth engine than a job killer: 92% of employers report some level of AI adoption already, and rather than cutting headcount, companies are using the technology to expand their teams, speed up hiring, and raise what they expect from the people they employ.

More than a third of employers (35%) say AI will increase their total headcount going forward, while another third (33%) expect it to shift their role mix rather than shrink overall employment. That optimism extends to performance too: 57% of employers have already raised their baseline productivity expectations because of AI.

“AI is changing the way employers plan for their workforce. New roles are emerging across the labor market, but the bar is rising with them,” said Nicole Bachaud, ZipRecruiter Labor Economist. “What we're seeing is a fundamental shift in expectations on both sides of the hiring process — employers want higher-skilled, higher-producing candidates, while job seekers want a faster, more transparent hiring experience.”

Additional key findings from the report include:

  • AI skills are now a strong advantage or a flat-out requirement. 74% of employers call AI skills a strong advantage or requirement for new hires, and half expect candidates to already be practical or advanced users.
  • Entry-level work is getting more substantive. With 38% of employers offloading basic data processing to AI and 31% raising experience requirements, entry-level roles are shifting toward higher-value contributions from day one.
  • Formal AI training remains uneven. 22% of employers provide mandatory AI training for all employees, another 23% offer it to specific departments, and the remaining 55% rely on optional resources (34%) or provide no training at all (17%).
