How the MSW program prepares students for professional practice
Bellevue University designed the MSW program to prepare students for advanced generalist practice and specialized roles. Students study social work practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. The curriculum requires coursework in human behavior, policy, research, and intervention methods. Students learn to apply evidence-informed approaches, assess client needs, and evaluate outcomes.
The program requires students to demonstrate competencies in ethical behavior, policy practice, and research-informed decision-making. Students engage with frameworks that address human rights and social, racial, economic, and environmental issues. Graduates complete the program with the skills to assess, intervene, and evaluate across service settings.
“This program reflects Bellevue University’s commitment to preparing compassionate, highly skilled professionals who are ready to respond to complex social challenges in their communities,” said Dr. Michelle Kempke Eppler, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Through rigorous coursework and meaningful practicum experiences, students develop the judgment and perspective needed to create lasting impact.”
What students experience through practicum education and specialization
The new Bellevue MSW program includes practicum education as a required component. Students complete 920 hours of supervised field experience across foundation and advanced levels. Practicum courses align with classroom instruction and include integrative seminars that connect academic learning to field practice. Students perform direct service, apply theory, and develop professional identity in real-world environments.
“Our MSW program is designed to support students who are balancing work, family, and community responsibilities, with a flexible structure that helps them stay engaged and succeed throughout their academic journey,” said Dr. Julia Burns, Program Director.
In the advanced year, students select either an Advanced Generalist or Military Social Work specialization. The Military Social Work track focuses on practice with service members, veterans, and families, including coursework on military culture, trauma, and policy systems. Both tracks include advanced practicum placements that build leadership, assessment, and intervention skills.
