Comfort Keepers® Celebrates Eighth Annual National Day of Joy, Highlighting the Power of Connection Across Generations
New Research Reveals Caregiving Brings Both Challenges and Deep Joy, Strengthening Bonds Between Aging Parents and their Adult Children
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As an advocate of positive, joyful living, Comfort Keepers®, a market-leading provider of uplifting home care for seniors and adults who need assistance, is celebrating its eighth annual National Day of Joy by unveiling new insights from a national survey, revealing that while family caregiving is often associated with stress and sacrifice, it is also a profound source of joy, purpose, and connection.
The research, conducted among 2,000 parents who also care for an aging parent, underscores the dual nature of caregiving today: both meaningful and complex. While 92% of respondents say caregiving brings both joy and emotional strain, the majority wouldn’t choose to take on less responsibility. In fact, 87% describe caring for their aging parents as one of the most rewarding parts of their lives, with 93% saying it has brought them closer together and strengthened their relationship.
“Caregiving is often framed around the challenges, but what we see every day, and what this research reinforces, is that it’s also one of the most meaningful ways families connect,” said Natalie Black, Chief Executive Officer of Comfort Keepers. “The National Day of Joy is a reminder that joy isn’t found in grand gestures, but in the everyday moments, conversations, shared meals, laughter, that bring generations closer together and create lasting memories.”
For many families, joy is rooted in simple, consistent moments. The survey found that everyday interactions, such as talking (72%), sharing meals (68%), and helping with daily care (67%), are among the most meaningful sources of connection for adult children and their aging parents. Seniors echoed this sentiment, finding joy in routines like enjoying a morning coffee, spending time outdoors, or engaging in hobbies that bring purpose and fulfillment.
Despite the rewards, caregiving comes with real demands. Many adult children report feeling stretched thin, balancing careers, parenting responsibilities, and the needs of aging loved ones. More than half (55%) say they struggle to keep up with daily responsibilities, while 69% report needing additional support in their caregiving role. At the same time, 85% say greater access to respite or in-home care would make a meaningful, positive difference.
“Caregiving is one of the most powerful expressions of love, but it’s also disruptive to routines initially creating a life out of balance for families,” said Sherri Snelling, gerontologist, author, and spokesperson for Comfort Keepers. “What’s so compelling about this research is that it reframes the narrative, showing that even in the midst of stress, caregiving can foster healing, strengthen relationships, as well as create a sense of purpose and accomplishment that connects generations in lasting ways.”
Celebrated on the last Wednesday in June (June 24, 2026), the National Day of Joy was established to highlight the importance of joy as a critical component of emotional and physical well-being. Through its approach to in-home care, Comfort Keepers helps older adults remain engaged, independent, and connected to the people and experiences that matter most, while also supporting family caregivers in maintaining balance and well-being.
Across the country, more than 100 Comfort Keepers offices will celebrate the National Day of Joy through local events, community activations, and social media engagement, encouraging individuals and families to embrace meaningful moments together. From simple acts of connection to larger community gatherings, the day serves as a reminder that joy can be found in everyday life.
