US Researcher Indranil Singh is Among the Winners of the 13th Edition of the IBSA Foundation Fellowship for His Innovative Research on Aging

  • Indranil Singh, a researcher at Harvard University and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, is recognized as a 2025 IBSA Foundation Fellowship winner for a project focused on advancing healthy aging and regenerative medicine
  • A total of 398 applications from 64 countries mark the most internationally diverse year in the Fellowship program’s history
  • The 2025 Fellowship program recipients, announced in Barcelona, represent leading institutions across the US, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Austria

PARSIPPANY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The IBSA Foundation for scientific research announced that a young US researcher is among the winners of the 13th edition of the IBSA Foundation Fellowship, the prestigious program promoted by IBSA Foundation to support scientific research. Every year six fellowships of €32,000 each are awarded to young scientists under the age of 40.

Indranil Singh of the Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology at Harvard University and the Biology of Adversity Project at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is an awardee in the “healthy aging/regenerative medicine” category. Singh’s project, “Psychosocial stress induced viral mimicry as an epigenetic writer of immune aging,” will examine how chronic psychosocial stress triggers antiviral-like immune programs in hematopoietic stem cells and leaves lasting epigenetic changes that resemble immune aging. Singh’s research aims to map these stress-driven trajectories and test whether blocking key “writer” pathways can reverse persistent inflammation and preserve immune regeneration to support a healthy lifespan.

The Fellowship Program and 2025 Edition

The IBSA Foundation Fellowship program supports young scientists under 40 by funding innovative basic research in key scientific areas: dermatology, endocrinology, fertility/urology, orthopedics/rheumatology/pain medicine, and healthy aging/regenerative medicine. In an increasingly competitive funding landscape for early-career researchers, the program continues to play an important role in fostering the next generation of scientific talent.

This year, IBSA Foundation for scientific research received a record 398 applications from researchers in 64 countries. This milestone was celebrated in Barcelona (Spain) during the event “Empowering Young Talent, Inspiring Tomorrow’s Science”, which honored the 2025 Fellowship recipients and officially launched the 2026 call for applications.

Global Reach and Emerging Scientific Priorities

2025 saw a remarkable surge in global engagement with winners hailing from world-class institutions in the US, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Austria. This widening geographical scope highlights the program's growing international prestige. Particularly notable was the rapid growth of the "healthy aging/regenerative medicine" category, which was introduced in 2022. The category attracted 136 proposals, accounting for over a third of all submissions, signaling a major area of scientific interest.

These fellowships are designed to give promising scientists the resources and independence they need to pursue innovative research and build the foundation for future breakthroughs. Investing in researchers early in their careers is one of the most meaningful ways we can advance science,” said Nick Hart, CEO, IBSA USA.

Advancing Equity, Inclusion and Research Access

As part of its commitment to a more equitable future for science, the IBSA Foundation is also working to address global disparities in research funding. In 2025, nearly 60% of the Fellowship program applicants were female researchers, a testament to the project’s role in fostering inclusive opportunities in STEM. With over €1.8 million invested to date across 65 projects, the Foundation is directly strengthening a more diverse and robust global scientific community.

"IBSA Foundation is dedicated to identifying and championing young scientists who are pursuing fundamental questions in basic research,” stated Silvia Misiti, Director of IBSA Foundation for scientific research. “The record international participation in the Fellowship program and the increasing diversity of talent we attract each year highlight the vital importance of our mission. Additionally, this year's Research Equity Prize reinforces our ongoing efforts to promote equity and access to resources for researchers in developing countries.”

Introduced in the 2025 Call for Proposals, the Research Equity Prize recognizes the best scientific project conducted in a laboratory, research institute or university based in a developing country.

The strong engagement in 2025 further confirms the IBSA Foundation Fellowship program’s ability to attract top talent from across Europe, the US and developing countries, reflecting the program’s increasingly global reach. Since its inception, the Fellowship program has received over 2,000 applications from more than 60 countries, underscoring the importance of international collaboration in advancing scientific discovery.

Opening of the 2026 Call for Applications

The 2026 Fellowship program’s call for applications is officially open. This year, seven fellowships, each worth €32,000, will be awarded across the five scientific areas. In addition, one researcher will receive The IBSA Foundation Research Equity Prize, a €5,000 award for the best scientific project from a developing country, reinforcing the Foundation’s commitment to supporting diverse research landscapes.

Researchers are invited to submit their proposals for the 2026 Fellowship program by January 31, 2027 via the dedicated platform on the IBSA Foundation website.
