Spellbook Welcomes Former Shopify CTO, Debuts New Executive Model

Jean-Michel Lemieux will serve across functions, betting AI killed the trade-off between building and leading

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Spellbook, the AI infrastructure for contracts used by over 4,500 in-house teams and law firms, today announced that Jean-Michel Lemieux has joined the company. The former Shopify and Atlassian chief technology officer takes on the newly created role designed specifically for AI-native companies as Executive Individual Contributor (EIC).

In an era where software is built faster than ever, the new bottleneck is the speed of decisions and coordination. To address this, Spellbook is embedding an experienced technical leader directly into the company’s most challenging projects. Unlike traditional executive roles confined to a single department, the EIC functions as a high-leverage operator working across product, engineering, go-to-market, and internal systems for the AI-native enterprise.

"AI companies need new organizational shapes," said Scott Stevenson, CEO of Spellbook. "The old model optimized around managing functions, but AI collapses those boundaries. Speed now comes from how well the company moves as one. Jean-Michel is building the AI-first operating system for our company, applying his technical expertise and leadership across every part of the business, so we move as fast and precisely as our product.”

Lemieux, who previously helped scale both Shopify and Atlassian from growth stage through IPOs, has also been an investor and advisor to Spellbook for the past year. During this time, Spellbook won the Rocketship Award, recognizing it as Canada’s fastest-growing company.

“Contracts are the APIs of the real world – every transaction runs on them – so by making legal workflows frictionless, Spellbook is accelerating the agreements that underpin the global economy," said Lemieux. "I’m joining this exceptional team full-time to help accelerate execution across the entire company, from code and product to operations and strategy.”

The world has entered into one of the largest investment cycles in decades. Trillions of dollars are being deployed into energy, AI, manufacturing, transportation and the modernization of critical global systems. Despite this, progress still moves at the speed of contracts. Spellbook’s mission is to modernize the $1 trillion transactional legal market so the contract system can keep pace with the global economy.
