In 1984, when Chris Marchetti was working as a dispatcher for a Los Angeles courier company, its owner gave him an ultimatum: take over or move on. He took over and, in May of 1986, brought Excel Courier home to Virginia. He opened with a dispatcher, two drivers, and a one-room office with a telephone and a manual typewriter. The mission was simple: deliver what others had promised.
