Opening on the heels of the museum’s 250,000th visitor milestone, “Game Plan” taps into what makes Saint Louis unique: a place where world-class chess and deep-rooted sports culture intersect. Spanning all three galleries and running through Spring 2027, the exhibition explores how strategy, discipline and competitive spirit connect the mental game of chess with the physical world of sport.
“Saint Louis has long been a city where sports define community identity, and today it also stands at the center of the global chess movement,” said Shannon Bailey, chief curator at WCHOF. “What’s fascinating is how often the same mindset shows up across both worlds, how athletes and chess players prepare, adapt and compete under pressure. This exhibition explores those parallels through objects, stories and interactive experiences that connect the board to the field.”
Where Strategy Meets Sport
Curated by Shannon Bailey and Emily Allred, the exhibition unfolds across three immersive galleries:
- Gallery 1: Hall of Legends highlights elite competitors—from grandmasters to professional athletes—who demonstrate how preparation, focus, and resilience transcend disciplines. Scientific insights into cognition and performance reinforce the shared mindset required to succeed at the highest levels.
- Gallery 2: Gateway to Great Sports grounds the exhibition in Saint Louis’ rich sports heritage, featuring iconic teams, historic moments, and the civic pride that defines the region. The gallery also underscores the city’s rise as a global chess hub, fueled by the vision and support of Rex Sinquefield and Dr. Jeanne Cairns Sinquefield.
- Gallery 3: Fan Zone invites visitors to step into the action with interactive, sports-inspired chess experiences designed for all ages—transforming spectators into participants.
Iconic Artifacts Across Two Worlds
The exhibition features a wide-ranging collection of objects that bridge chess and sports, including:
- A game-used bat gifted to World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov by professional baseball player Joey Votto after a milestone home run
- A game-used puck, jersey and stick from professional hockey player Robert Thomas
- Chess-based performance training developed by Seth Makowsky, founder of Poison Pawn, including custom training systems and chess sets used by professional, Olympic, and collegiate athletes to build decision-making, focus, and composure under pressure
- Memorabilia from the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame, including World Series–era jerseys worn by Mike Matheny and Adam Wainwright
- Chessboxing artifacts from champions, including Matt Thomas and James Canty III
- Signed memorabilia from professional sports legends like Wayne Gretzky
- Historic photograph by Terry O’Neill featuring icons Franz Beckenbauer and Bobby Moore
Additional highlights include innovative chess sets, emerging hybrid sports like chess diving and chess wrestling, and interactive installations designed to engage visitors of all backgrounds.
“Performance is defined in moments,” said Seth Makowsky, founder of Poison Pawn. “At the highest levels of sport, the difference is not physical ability; it’s decision-making under pressure. Chess creates a controlled environment where athletes can train that skill directly, learning to recognize patterns faster, stay composed under stress and execute with clarity when it matters most.”
A Year of Play
Timed to span a full year of sports seasons, Game Plan reinforces a central idea: chess is not only a game of intellect, but a sport of strategy, competition and community.
As Saint Louis continues to define itself at the intersection of tradition and innovation, “Game Plan: The Strategy of Chess & Sports” offers a compelling new way to experience both.
The exhibition will be on view for a full year through April 4, 2027, at the World Chess Hall of Fame & Galleries in Saint Louis to celebrate all sports and their respective seasons of play. Admission is always free and open to the public. For more information about the exhibition and programming, please visit our website at worldchesshof.org.
The Saint Louis community is invited to the opening reception on Thursday, May 7, 2026, from 5 to 8 p.m. Complimentary admission and valet. RSVPs are requested. Please email events@worldchesshof.org for more information or to register.
