Green Hills Software Congratulates NASA and Lockheed Martin on the Successful First Crewed Flight of the Orion Spacecraft

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Green Hills Software congratulates NASA and Lockheed Martin on the successful first crewed flight of the Orion spacecraft, which runs the INTEGRITY®-178 real-time operating system (RTOS) on the most critical systems. NASA's historic Artemis II mission tested Orion’s life support systems, manual piloting capabilities, and thermal protection during its 10-day crewed mission around the Moon. These systems will be critical to the Artemis IV landing and other future expeditions. During the development phase, Lockheed Martin selected INTEGRITY-178 to run on the Flight Control Module (FCM) because it was the most technically mature RTOS and offered a more economical commercial off-the-shelf solution. The FCM uses the same hardware and INTEGRITY-178 RTOS configuration as the flight control electronics on the Boeing 787, which was certified to the highest design assurance level (DAL A).

“Green Hills Software is proud to have supported this historic mission of the Lockheed Martin Orion spacecraft," said Dan O'Dowd, CEO of Green Hills Software. "Twenty-four years of proven reliability and certification to DO-178C DAL A make the INTEGRITY-178 RTOS the ideal fit for the Orion's flight computer. While other components of the Artemis II mission used an ordinary RTOS, such as VxWorks, Lockheed Martin and NASA rely on INTEGRITY-178 for the most critical systems, including Orion’s FCM."

Orion uses the INTEGRITY-178 RTOS in the spacecraft’s avionics systems, including the Flight Control Module (FCM). The FCM acts as the central control of the spacecraft, managing navigation, propulsion, life support, and system monitoring during all phases of flight. Comprised of four identical, redundant computers with a fifth as backup, it processes data, manages crew interfaces, and, along with the crew, controls the spacecraft's trajectory. The high reliability of INTEGRITY-178 complements the hardware redundancy of the FCM.

The INTEGRITY-178 RTOS from Green Hills Software was designed from inception for the highest levels of safety and security. It was the first commercial partition-enforcing RTOS approved as compliant to DO-178B Level A objectives (2002), and it remains the only RTOS to obtain Common Criteria EAL 6+ security certification. Its multicore version, INTEGRITY-178 tuMP™, was the first operating system to be part of a successful multicore certification to DO-178C DAL A and AC 20-193/CAST-32A objectives. INTEGRITY-178 and INTEGRITY-178 tuMP are field-proven with over 80 DO-178B/C Level A/EAL 6+ unique customer certification packages delivered across more than 30 different microprocessors. INTEGRITY-178 tuMP is fully aligned with a Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) by supporting the FACE® Technical Standard.
