Build-to-Rent Leaders from NexMetro Communities, Catamount Constructors, National Multifamily Housing Council & Associated General Contractors of Colorado Meet to Highlight Housing Solutions with HUD Secretary Scott Turner and Congressman Gabe Evans

COMMERCE CITY, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Leaders from across the build-to-rent (BTR) housing industry, including NexMetro Communities, Catamount Constructors, National Multifamily Housing Council, and Associated General Contractors of Colorado, gathered earlier this month at Avilla Buffalo Run in Commerce City, Colorado alongside U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Scott Turner and U.S. Representative Gabe Evans (CO-8). This visit highlighted how purpose-built rental home communities are expanding housing choices, supporting working families, and strengthening communities across the country.

The group toured Avilla Buffalo Run, one of Colorado’s first BTR communities, developed by NexMetro Communities and built by Catamount Constructors. This 123 rental home neighborhood features single-level one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes with private backyards and resort-style amenities, serving as a working example of how BTR communities are meeting a critical and growing need in the American housing landscape.

BTR communities are purpose-built neighborhoods designed to serve residents across all walks of life: new families planting roots, seniors seeking maintenance-free living, young professionals starting their careers, service members and veterans navigating life transitions, and working families whose jobs are essential to the communities they call home. BTR expands the range of quality housing available to American families, working hand in hand with homeownership to meet the full spectrum of housing needs.

According to Yardi Matrix, nearly 39,000 BTR units were delivered across the United States in 2024 alone. Expanding the supply of homes in every form is how communities become more accessible and affordable for the families who need them.

“Families across the country are struggling to find affordable places to live. Build-to-Rent (BTR) homes offer a real, immediate solution—providing badly needed homes in communities nationwide. I was thrilled to join Secretary Turner and Congressman Evans on a tour last week of a wonderful BTR community in Commerce City, CO developed by NMHC member NexMetro Communities and constructed by NMHC member Catamount Constructors, Inc. The visit by the Secretary and Congressman highlights how important housing affordability and innovative BTR communities like Avilla Buffalo Run are to policymakers during this election season. I appreciated the opportunity to help showcase the important work of our members and the role BTR plays in providing homes for young folks starting their lives, households on the path to homeownership, mature residents looking to downsize, military service members and veterans, among many, many others who happily build their lives in BTR communities,” noted Sharon Wilson Geno, President of National Multifamily Housing Council.

“As I travel across the country, I am encouraged by the work being done on the local level to address housing affordability,” said HUD Secretary Scott Turner. “We’re seeing common sense solutions that can be replicated nationwide. Avilla Buffalo Run, one of Colorado’s first build-to-rent communities, has delivered over 120 affordable housing units, and this is only the beginning. I’m grateful for Congressman Evans’ warm welcome to Colorado and look forward to continuing our work together.”

"NexMetro’s cottage-style multifamily neighborhoods are compelling because they deliver quality, privacy, and the neighborhood feel of a home with the flexibility of renting,” said NexMetro CEO Josh Hartmann, adding that the company has developed more than 60 Avilla Homes communities across the nation. “We’re proud to expand innovative housing opportunities by creating thoughtfully designed purpose-built rental communities that offer a sought-after lifestyle to a broad and growing segment of Americans.”

“Catamount Constructors has delivered BTR communities across the country, and what we know from our deep experience is that this model works. A single BTR project adds hundreds of purpose-built homes to the housing pool at once, built by our employee-owners alongside the subcontractors, project partners, and tradespeople who power every community we construct. These are real jobs and real homes, at a time when the country needs more of both, BTR is one of the most effective tools we have to deliver them,” commented Jared Ford, President of BTR and Multifamily at Catamount Constructors.

“BTR developments like Avilla Buffalo Run not only supply much-needed inventory to the Colorado housing market, including young people looking to use this model as they save for their first home purchase and other demographics like seniors looking to downsize as they move into retirement,” emphasized Jeff Barratt, President of Associated General Contractors of Colorado. “These developments also help drive the economic engine for the construction industry providing projects creating much-needed jobs for skilled craft trades men and women that ultimately contribute back into the Colorado economy.”

“I was proud to welcome Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Scott Turner, to Commerce City in Colorado’s Eighth District to discuss the importance of housing affordability across Northern Colorado. These conversations with local community experts are critical to expanding opportunities and helping more hardworking families achieve the dream of homeownership or a housing option that best suits their lifestyle,” remarked Congressman Gabe Evans.
