WHY: Improper flushing is a bigger problem than many people realize.

Through RFA’s #FlushSmart campaign, recognition of the Do Not Flush symbol increased from 69% of Californians recognizing it in 2021 to 81% of adults nationally recognizing it in 2025, according to RFA’s annual survey. Additionally, about half (49%) of Americans rely on product packaging to determine if something is flushable or not.

However, 50% of people are still flushing items they know they shouldn’t, making RFA’s education outreach still important. RFA needs your help in promoting smart flushing habits and has free materials (social media static & animation, infographics, children’s activities, etc.) available at www.flushsmart.org.
