Westinghouse and Hyundai E&C Welcome Suppliers to First Finland-Sweden Nuclear New Plant Symposium

Symposium Highlighted Localization as a Core Objective and Urged Suppliers to Join Supply Chain

HELSINKI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Westinghouse Electric Company and Hyundai E&C consortium welcomed more than 150 attendees from local companies, government and industry organizations to the first Finland-Sweden Supplier Symposium on March 10 and 11.

During the event, participants learned about AP1000® technology opportunities in the Nordics, including the Early Works Agreement (EWA) the consortium signed with Fortum for a potential AP1000 project. Under the EWA, the consortium is performing early project planning, site assessments and focused licensing and permitting activities. Participants engaged in networking and learned about plant equipment and services, sourcing requirements and supply chain opportunities where they might participate.

“As the first symposium of its kind in Helsinki, it underscores the shared commitment to building a strong global supplier base for AP1000 projects,” said Joel Eacker, Senior Vice President of APX Projects in Europe. “Companies that join the supply chain are better positioned to participate in major nuclear programs, creating local economic benefits and supporting high-quality job growth both locally and on AP1000 projects globally.”

Lee Han-woo, Chief Executive Officer of Hyundai Engineering & Construction, said in his welcoming remarks that the company’s extensive experience in nuclear power plant construction worldwide, combined with the global nuclear technology of Westinghouse Electric Company, would contribute to the energy transition and reliable power supply of the Nordic countries. “We hope this symposium will serve as the starting point for long-term cooperation that creates tangible value for the industries and local communities of Finland and Sweden, as well as the broader Nordic region,” he added.

The advanced AP1000 reactor is the only operating Generation III+ reactor with fully passive safety systems, modular construction design and the smallest footprint per MWe on the market. There are six AP1000 reactors currently setting operational performance and availability records worldwide with 14 additional reactors under construction and five more under contract. The AP1000 technology has been selected for nuclear energy programs in Poland, Ukraine and Bulgaria, and is also under consideration at multiple other sites in Europe, the Middle East and North America.

Westinghouse Electric Company is the future of energy, providing reliable, innovative nuclear technologies and services globally. Westinghouse pioneered commercial nuclear power, delivering the world’s first commercial pressurized water reactor in 1957. The company has industrialized more nuclear reactors than any other company, with its technology forming the basis of half of the world's operating nuclear plants. More than 140 years of innovation makes Westinghouse the preferred partner for advanced technologies covering the complete nuclear energy life cycle.
