Ten-Unit Westinghouse AP1000® Fleet Deployment Will Create More Than $1 Trillion in U.S. GDP

PricewaterhouseCoopers Study Details Comprehensive U.S. Economic Impact During Fleet Construction and Ongoing Operations

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Westinghouse Electric Company released a comprehensive, independent report from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC (PwC) detailing the significant economic impact of deploying a fleet of 10 AP1000® advanced modular reactors in the United States.

The study found that the construction phase of a 10-unit AP1000 fleet can generate more than $92.8 billion of gross domestic product (GDP) for the U.S. and support 44,300 high-paying jobs annually for 13 years. Once operational, the 10-unit fleet would create an additional $1.03 trillion of GDP over its 80-year lifetime while supporting 22,500 jobs annually.

“As the only fully licensed, construction-ready advanced reactor available today, the proven AP1000 modular technology is the quickest way to unleash commercial nuclear power in the U.S. to drive our nation’s AI dominance globally,” said Dan Sumner, Interim CEO, Westinghouse. “This report highlights that work to deploy a 10-unit AP1000 fleet can begin immediately, creating long-term economic benefits as well as high-paying, highly skilled jobs for generations to come.”

Additional key findings outlined in the PwC report include:

  • Ten AP1000 units can power at least 7.5 million homes, directly supporting U.S. goals of quadrupling nuclear generation to 400 GW by 2050.
  • The construction phase of a 10-unit AP1000 fleet would create $54.7 billion in labor income and $20.1 billion in tax revenues, while the 80-year operational phase would support $329 billion in labor income and $271 billion in tax revenues.
  • An AP1000 fleet in the U.S. will further strengthen America’s nuclear workforce to fill the thousands of positions created, including highly skilled roles in engineering, manufacturing and construction.

The advanced AP1000 reactor is the only operating Generation III+ reactor with fully passive safety systems, modular construction design and the smallest footprint per MWe on the market. There are six AP1000 reactors currently setting operational performance and availability records worldwide with 14 additional reactors under construction and five more under contract. The AP1000 technology has been selected for nuclear energy programs in Poland, Ukraine and Bulgaria, and is also under consideration at multiple other sites in Europe, the Middle East and North America.
